About The Position

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is seeking a Curator of Education (Curator 2). This position, as part of the Department of Tourism & Cultural Affairs, is crucial for supporting daily museum operations and providing leadership, vision, access, planning, and management for its volunteer and educational programs. The Curator of Education will supervise Museum Attendants and volunteers and report to the Museum Director. Key responsibilities include developing educational activities, outreach programs, and lesson plans; updating and maintaining procedures and policies; managing relevant databases; strategic planning; budgeting; personnel and volunteer supervision; project fundraising; participating in public programs; assessing user experience and use statistics; and providing information for reports. The role also involves supporting the management of the museum’s website, social media channels, and publications, and organizing presentations for diverse audiences including adults, children, school groups, and community organizations. Under general supervision, the Curator will maintain the Education Collection and may contribute to the preparation of long-term and temporary exhibits, serve on exhibit teams with curators and experts, develop outreach concepts and content, assist with design, prepare collections, manage conservation and security of collections on exhibit, and research and write labels and interpretive media. Please note that weekend, holiday, and evening work may be required for special events. Curators perform a wide variety of museum work for a specific collection and/or program area within a museum.

Requirements

Two or more years of applicable experience as described in the job duties.
An applicable Bachelor’s degree or above.

Curate collections as per agreements, respond to research inquiries, and manage collections.
Conduct research, develop content for programs, and manage educational tours and events.
Participate in exhibit preparation, develop plans and content, manage storage and conservation.
Provide information on museum practices to external entities.
Coordinate the use of collections in exhibits, programs, and publications.
Interpret results of completed surveys, perform field evaluations and site excavations, catalog and plot recovered artifacts.
Utilize acquired information for report preparation, scientific research, educational purposes, and determine impact to cultural resources.
Conduct field surveys of archaeological, historical, and pre-historical sites, and documents.
Provide training, direction, and interpretation of policies and procedures.
Collect, register, arrange, research, document, and catalog materials for an assigned collection.
Provide access, security, and conservation for the assigned collection.
Carry out interpretations of collections.
Develop, execute, and evaluate educational programs and research.
Conduct field activities.
Investigate and pursue potential acquisitions.
Prepare publications on program areas and collections.
Perform related duties as assigned.
