About The Position

We are looking for someone who enjoys interacting with the public, providing outstanding customer service, and working with diverse groups. A strong candidate for this position would have experience working with collection management, be able to prioritize and multitask in a busy workplace, collaborating with artists and contractors to create exhibits and programs that complement the City Museum’s mission. Incumbents provide information about exhibit changes to Museum staff, seek opportunities for partnerships and alternative funding (grants), and guide temporary exhibit artists and contractors with design, installation, and maintenance of temporary exhibits. Candidates should possess effective computer skills, clear verbal and written communication skills particularly as it pertains to exhibit text, exceptional attendance, reliability, flexibility, and strong attention to detail. A strong candidate will be able to perform extensive research for public and external inquiries, referral, source validation related to local historical artifacts.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in museum studies/Museology.
  • Master’s degree in art history, Humanities, Archeology, Anthropology or equivalent field as determined by the Museum Director AND one (1) year of experience working with museum/art collections or exhibits.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college including some coursework in museology; art, anthropology, education, archaeology, history or a closely related field, AND Two (2) years of experience working in a museum/art collections or exhibits.
  • A valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
  • Employee MUST have access to reliable transportation to transport self to locations where community collections and programs are held.
  • Effective computer skills

  • Exceptional attendance, reliability, flexibility, and strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Acquisition, registration, condition, study and management of the Juneau Douglas City Museum permanent and loan collections, including approximately 7,000 objects, 90,000 photographs, 10,000 archival papers, 4,000 reference documents, and structures/large objects of historical significance located off-site around the City and Borough of Juneau.
  • Researches and recommends the solicitation, acquisition or de-accession of art works, historical objects and archival material for the collections; assists with establishing insurance values; document in-coming and out-going loans.
  • Maintenance and upgrades for permanent exhibits; lends professional advice to the Library Director to develop and recommend exhibits, including the design, installation, and dismantling of temporary exhibits.
  • Supports solo artist exhibits with instillation, design, and dismantling.
  • Performs extensive research for public and external inquiries, including historical information, complex analysis, summarization, artifact searches, interpretation, translation, and referral, source validation related to historical artifacts, structures, and geographic areas.
  • Identifies and assesses needs from collections and makes recommendations to the Library Director for prioritization.
  • Provides information on the collections for newsletter, publicity, reports, grants, and public presentations.
  • Makes recommendations on and develops and implements exhibit and collection management guidelines and policies.
  • Provide professional curatorial advice or consultative services to small and larger museums locally and within the region.
  • Maintains and upgrades collections database, photo-documentation and insurance records of all collections.
  • May assist at the front desk, including opening and closing the Museum facility and utilizing a point-of-sale(POS) system.
  • Monitors environmental conditions in exhibits and storage areas; makes or recommends modifications to ensure the preservation of the collections.
  • Assists with facility operations and monitoring of the HVAC system.
