About The Position

HDR's cultural resource department is currently taking applications for our cultural resources (archaeology / historic preservation) internship program for the Summer 2027. This is a paid position intended to provide current students with experience working in the field of cultural resources management. Summer field projects are anticipated to consist of archeological survey, eligibility testing, and data recovery, with associated data entry and lab work (such as lithic, faunal, or FCR analyses). Interns will also have the chance to participate in report and document write up as well as contribute to education and outreach projects. This role will have significant field time, including travel both in and out of state, potentially for long periods of time.

Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
Attention to detail a must
Must possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
Basic Microsoft Office skills

Nice To Haves

Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or closely related field
2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
Completion of an accredited field school
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate as part of a team
A strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn and execute new tasks

Responsibilities

Gain real-world experience on exciting archaeological projects
Gain an understanding of the regulatory framework of cultural resource management
Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals’ programs
Perform assignments under the direct supervision of your Section Manager, Cultural Resource Specialists, or other professionals
Assist with a variety of archeological field and reporting work, such as conducting desktop evaluations, field surveys, data entry, and curation
Assist project archeologists and crew chiefs as needed
Assist with the development of educational and public outreach programs
Perform other duties as needed
Be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures)
Walk up to 6 miles a day without any physical assistance (this could include hiking short distances in scrub and native vegetation and uneven ground conditions in high temperatures)
Record cultural resources in the field including: Complete field forms accurately and concisely, Complete sketch maps of sites, Use hand-held GPS units, Photograph resources
Lift up to 25 pounds without assistance
Travel for fieldwork, in and out of state, may be required for extended periods of time
Work hours other than 8 to 5 which may include weekends and/or night shifts
Be able to operate a vehicle day or night
Have (or able to obtain) a valid Texas Driver’s License
