About The Position

This position provides essential English-Navajo language translation and interpretation services for medical staff and Navajo patients. The role involves translating medical issues, communicating patient concerns, and coordinating interpreting services for other languages using a volunteer list. The Cultural Liaison also provides Navajo translation and cultural sensitivity for patients with long-term care needs and end-of-life issues, including Advance Directives, Living Wills, and Durable Medical Power of Attorney. This role collaborates with patient experience teams to address concerns in a culturally appropriate manner and coordinates training for staff on interpreting and cultural sensitivity. The liaison acts as a resource for Navajo culture, assists patient navigators, and helps transport patients within the facility. Responsibilities include following safety protocols, assisting at the Welcome Center, recognizing cultural differences, responding to inquiries, monitoring the lobby, reporting suspicious activity, understanding emergency plans, and entering patient complaints into an electronic system. The role also involves assisting with immediate resolution of patient complaints and providing rotational on-call coverage and after-hours telephone interpreting services.

Requirements

  • Applicant must have a valid, unrestricted insurable driver’s license
  • Resumes and references are required
  • Two (2) years’ experience of translating and interpreting the Navajo language.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (HSE).
  • Current certificate of Indian blood (CIB)
  • Valid insurable driver’s license
  • High school diploma and college degree or transcripts

Responsibilities

  • Provides English - Navajo language translation and interpretations for the medical staff and Navajo patients; including translation of medical issues for patients and families and communicates patient concerns to medical staff to meet patient needs.
  • Maintains and coordinates interpreting services for other languages for patients utilizing the volunteer interpreters list.
  • Coordinates interpreting and/or translating training for FDIHB staff.
  • Provides Navajo translation and cultural sensitivity for patients with long term care needs and end of life issue, Advance Directive, Living Wills and Durable Medical Power of Attorney provided in the TMC Clinical Programs.
  • Coordinates with the Patient Experience Lead Navigator, Patient Experience Supervisor, and/or the Patient Experience Manager to address patient and visitor concerns in a customer-friendly and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Coordinates with FDIHB’s Native Practitioners to ensure staff are culturally sensitive to the needs of the Navajo Patients by training or providing educational material to staff.
  • Acts as a resource for Navajo culture to FDIHB Staff to meet the mission of the organization.
  • Assists Patient Navigators with greeting and determines needs of patients, families, and visitors in a cordial and helpful manner.
  • Assists with transporting patients to various clinics in the facility and retrieves patients from various clinics and will provide accurate directions to clinic locations.
  • Follows all protocols and procedures to ensure safe delivery of patients and their possessions.
  • Assists with providing service to patients reporting to the Welcome Center by calling for Transport service, obtaining wheelchairs, or other service providers.
  • Recognizes sensitive cultural differences and remains professional and remains courteous at all times and asks for help when needed.
  • Responds to questions in person or by telephone concerning the organization, functions, activities, and personnel of the hospital.
  • Monitors activities in the lobby and refers problems and questions to appropriate personnel office.
  • Notifies and reports all suspicious activity to Security and or entering into the electronic event reporting system.
  • Become familiar with the emergency paging codes and emergency plans in order to direct persons to a designated area for treatment, administrative, logistical, or staff pool area.
  • Enters patient complaints and/or grievances into the electronic event reporting system.
  • Assists with immediate resolution of a patient complaint by listening and coordinating the immediate resolution of the concern to the patient’s satisfaction.
  • Required to provide rotational on-call coverage and/or provide telephone Navajo interpreting services after hours and on weekends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
