About The Position

This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal and be accepted in the community as such. As a First Nations Cultural Broker, you will contribute to the continued implementation and improvement of our Indigenous Participation Plan (IPP) and actively support the delivery of First Nations-related requirements outlined in our National Heritage Trust (NHT) Deed. The role involves building strong relationships with First Nations communities and organisations, leading the delivery of First Nations commitments under the Deed, and implementing the Indigenous Participation Plan (IPP). You will also deliver cultural competency training, develop strategies to increase First Nations participation and engagement, and support growth in First Nations employment and leadership opportunities. The position aims to strengthen communication between Aboriginal communities and Hunter Local Land Services, identify opportunities for shared benefits, and address barriers to First Nations participation.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and accepted in the community as such
  • Proven experience in community engagement and collaboration with First Nations people and organisations
  • Advanced communication and community engagement skills, especially in engaging with First Nations community groups
  • Proficient project management skills
  • Advanced collaboration and teamwork skills including working with small project teams
  • Current NSW Class C Driver Licence and the ability and willingness to travel

Responsibilities

  • Build strong relationships with First Nations communities and organisations to support trust and collaboration.
  • Lead delivery of First Nations commitments under the Deed, including engagement, co-design, and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property considerations.
  • Implement and continuously improve the Indigenous Participation Plan (IPP) in partnership with regional stakeholders and government feedback.
  • Deliver cultural competency training and strengthen partnerships with local First Nations groups.
  • Develop strategies to increase First Nations participation and engagement across key projects.
  • Support growth in First Nations employment, leadership, and capacity building opportunities.
  • Contribute to achieving First Nations employment and supplier targets under the Deed.
  • Strengthen communication and engagement between Aboriginal communities and Hunter Local Land Services through meetings, advisory groups, calls, and site visits.
  • Identify opportunities that deliver shared benefits for Community, Country, and sustainable land management outcomes.
  • Identify and address barriers to First Nations participation, including cultural, logistical, technical, and capacity-related constraints.
