About The Position

The job of a middle school CTE teacher is to implement industry-based instruction and incorporate all aligned essential standards when preparing to teach and instruct students, to promote student achievement, to provide guidance, counsel, supervision and discipline to students, and to assess and evaluate performance and progress to enhance effective learning.

Requirements

  • Currently have or will have received by the start date a valid Washington State CTE Family & Consumer Science Teaching Certificate for grades 7-8, min or grades 7-12 preferred.
  • Currently have or will have earned by the start date a valid First Aid/CPR with AED certification, required.
  • Extensive knowledge of FACSE curricular areas including but not limited to: Family Health and Foods & Nutrition.
  • Knowledge (and experience desired) in providing active leadership, guidance and supervision for students in QMS FCCLA Chapter.
  • Strong technical and word processing skills required, coupled with competently utilizing technology in the classroom daily.

Responsibilities

  • Teach students the skills and attitudes to be successful in the various career paths related to Family & Consumer Science in accordance with state statutes, district policy and adopted curriculum, to help prepare students for lifelong learning and success in the world of work.
  • Foster an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned students; plans and instructional program designed to meet individual student needs and whole groups which may include at risk or special needs youth.
  • Create a positive classroom atmosphere to encourage and motivate students to learn essential skills, develop essential attitudes and experience.
  • Plan and prepare well organized series of learning opportunities and activities; established objectives to ensure mastery of district outcomes.
  • Assess and evaluate student achievement; adapt and modify techniques and material for effectiveness as necessary for student progress and success; seek and recommend special assistance as appropriate.
  • Assist students in developing self-esteem and responsible behaviors; model appropriate behavior; maintain and provide fair and consistent classroom management.
  • Acknowledge, discuss rewards and correct student behavior; discipline students as necessary and maintain student safety.
  • Evaluate and record student progress; prepare progress and grade reports as required; administers tests as necessary.
  • Attend or participate in all required staff meetings, committees, team building, field trips and other activities (may include overnight stay) deemed necessary by the district, building administration, and/or CTE director, in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional achievement.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.
  • Must have good human relations and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to keep confidentiality and show initiative when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the CTE Director, Building Principal or Superintendent.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to provide equity and excellence with students of all ability levels in a diverse student population.
  • Incorporate a wide variety of industry skills and competencies into daily lessons and course framework development for students having a wide range of achievement.
  • Skillfully use and demonstrate the classroom equipment and tools to students, while overseeing their safety.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications while working cooperatively with other CTE teachers in developing and sharing curriculum strategies.
  • Establish and maintain effective, positive communication and working relationships with students, parents or guardians, staff and administrators.
  • Ability to deal with students in a positive and confident manner; be fair and consistent when working with a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population; adapt to change and remain flexible; organize activities; manage student behavior; use good judgment to maintain a safe learning environment; provide instruction and demonstrate techniques.
  • Provide active leadership and direction for Family & Consumer Science Advisory Committee and the development of the QMS Family & Consumer Science Department five-year plan.
  • Commit to the education profession as evidenced by participation in curriculum development projects, district or building level committees, professional organizations, and by evidence of continuing education.
  • Set and maintain high expectations of students.
  • Ability to gain respect and confidence of students and community through the modeling of appropriate behavior, methods and attire.
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.
