About The Position

This position is responsible for performing CT scans and assisting Radiologists/PAs during invasive procedures. The CT/XR Tech will prepare and administer IV contrast, evaluate image quality, and perform basic patient care functions. They will also operate the radiology computer system, maintain the work area, and adhere to all safety and hospital policies. This role requires rotation through shifts, including call, holidays, and weekends.

Requirements

• Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology.
• ARRT certification in Radiology or NMTCB for Nuclear Medicine and advanced registry from the ARRT in CT within one year of hire required.
• BLS required.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development.
• Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
• Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies.
• Occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation.
• Frequently may be required to stretch, bend twist, squat or kneel in the daily operation of the CT department.
• May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, being near moving equipment.
• Required to use radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.

Responsibilities

• Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam and contacting the ordering provider for discrepancies.
• Properly identifies patients using two identifiers, assists patients, and provides a brief explanation of procedures.
• Prepares patients for procedures with a full explanation and documents on appropriate worksheets.
• Interviews patients for complete medical history, reviews EMRs for pertinent clinical history, and records medical history on requisitions.
• Correlates other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
• Assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results.
• Prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols, recording contrast type and amount upon request.
• Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed, recognizing abnormal anatomy and processing additional images or measurements as instructed.
• Performs basic patient care functions, informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in patient condition, and initiates life support measures when necessary.
• Assists in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies.
• Performs CT scanning and assists Radiologist/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique and adhering to infection control policies.
• Is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
• Practices radiation safety principles for self, employees, patients, and family members, following appropriate radiation safety standards.
• Reports malfunctioning equipment to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer.
• Maintains knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease.
• Adheres to hospital fire and safety procedures, attends in-service classes, and completes all required safety modules.
• Performs work in an accurate and timely manner in periods of crisis and emergency situations.
• Rotates shifts as required including call back, holidays, and weekends.
• Adheres to the Atrium Health attendance policy by being punctual and taking measures to prevent absences.
• Operates radiology computer system to include entering orders and charging procedures/supplies.
• Documents contrast administration in the MAR.
• Maintains assigned work area in a neat and orderly fashion, keeps area stocked, and cleans all work areas.
• Assists other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with a CT scan.
