The CT Technologist will examine requests and verify orders on each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam. They will contact the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. The technologist will properly identify patients using two identifiers, assist patients, and offer a brief explanation of the procedures. They will prepare patients for the procedure with a full explanation and document on appropriate worksheets. The role involves interviewing patients for a complete medical history, reviewing EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history, and recording medical history on requisitions. The technologist will also correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed. They will assume responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results, prepare and administer IV contrast according to departmental protocols, and record contrast type and amount upon request. Evaluating the technical quality of images and consulting with a Radiologist if needed is also a key function. The technologist will recognize abnormal anatomy and process any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed. Basic patient care functions will be performed, informing appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient's condition, and initiating life support measures for patients when necessary. Assisting in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies is also part of the role. The technologist will perform CT scanning and assist the Radiologist/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique and adhering to all relevant policies and procedures. They are authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner. Practicing principles of radiation safety for self, employees, patients, and family members is crucial. Malfunctioning equipment will be reported to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. Maintaining knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease is essential. Adherence to hospital fire and safety procedures, attending all in-service classes, and completing all required safety modules are mandatory. The technologist will perform work in an accurate and timely manner in periods of crisis and emergency situations where time is critical, and rotate shifts as required including call back, holidays, and weekends. Adherence to the Advocate Health attendance policy by being punctual and taking measures to prevent absences is expected. Operating the radiology computer system to include entering orders and charging procedures/supplies, and documenting contrast administration in the MAR are also responsibilities. Finally, maintaining the assigned work area in a neat and orderly fashion, keeping it stocked, and cleaning all work areas to promote cleanliness in the workplace are required. Assisting other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with a CT scan is also part of the role.
