The CT Technologist will examine requests and verify orders on each assigned patient, referring and questioning orders to the Radiologist before performing the exam. They will contact the ordering provider when there are discrepancies. The technologist will properly identify patients using two identifiers, assist them, and offer a brief explanation of the procedures. Patients will be prepared for the procedure with a full explanation, and documentation will be completed on appropriate worksheets. The role involves interviewing patients for a complete medical history, reviewing in-patients, ER, and outpatients EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history, and recording medical history on requisitions. The technologist will correlate other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed, assume responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results, and prepare and administer IV contrast according to departmental protocols. They will record contrast type and amount upon request, evaluate technical quality of images, and consult with a Radiologist if needed. Recognition of abnormal anatomy and processing of any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed are key functions. Basic patient care functions will be performed, and appropriate nursing personnel will be informed of any changes in the patient’s condition. Life support measures will be initiated for patients when necessary, and assistance will be provided during "code blue" procedures in medical emergencies. The technologist will perform CT scanning and assist the Radiologist/PA during invasive procedures, practicing proper sterile technique in the preparation of necessary supplies. All invasive procedures will be performed in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies and procedures. The technologist is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner. Principles of radiation safety for self, employees, patients, and family members will be practiced, along with following appropriate radiation safety standards. Malfunctioning equipment will be reported to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer. Knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease will be maintained. Hospital fire and safety procedures will be adhered to, and all in-service classes and required safety modules will be completed. Work will be performed in an accurate and timely manner, even in periods of crisis and emergency situations where time is critical. Shifts will be rotated as required, including call back, holidays, and weekends. The Atrium Health attendance policy will be adhered to by being punctual and taking measures to prevent absences. The radiology computer system will be operated, including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies. Contrast administration will be documented in the MAR. The assigned work area will be maintained in a neat and orderly fashion, kept completely stocked, and all work areas will be cleaned to promote cleanliness in the workplace. Other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, will be assisted when performing exams or services in conjunction with a CT scan.
