Cryptography Engineer, SEAR

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

The Cryptographic Engineering team within Apple’s Security Engineering & Architecture (SEAR) organization delivers cryptographic implementations and secure protocol engineering for Apple products. The team provides cryptographic foundations that protect user data and assets across products and services. The Cryptography Engineer analyzes, proposes, and validates cryptographic solutions; implements and reviews algorithms and protocols across architectures and embedded systems; and develops side-channel attack countermeasures. The role also focuses on improving performance, formally proving the correctness of cryptographic software, and accelerating deployment of quantum-secure algorithms. The engineer collaborates across Apple, including with Silicon Engineering and Cloud services, and helps drive adoption of security technologies across the organization. The role may also apply tools such as large language models and machine learning to cryptographic problems.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering background.
  • Familiarity with post-quantum cryptographic algorithms.
  • Expertise in fundamental cryptographic algorithms and their underlying mathematics.
  • Strong understanding of post-quantum algorithms and hybrid constructions.
  • Excellent C and systems programming skills.
  • Passion for creating effective and pragmatic cryptographic implementations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or expertise in formal verification.
  • Experience or expertise in side-channel countermeasures.
  • Experience or expertise in computer microarchitecture.
  • Experience or expertise in zero-knowledge proofs.
  • Experience or expertise in networking.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, propose, and validate cryptographic solutions for applications.
  • Implement and review cryptographic algorithms and protocols across a range of architectures and embedded systems.
  • Design and implement side-channel attack countermeasures.
  • Improve the performance of cryptographic software.
  • Formally prove the correctness of Apple cryptographic software.
  • Accelerate deployment of quantum-secure algorithms across Apple products and services.
  • Collaborate with teams across Apple, including Silicon Engineering and Cloud services, on security technologies and initiatives.
  • Promote and drive adoption of cryptographic technologies across the organization.
  • Explore applications of tools such as large language models and machine learning to cryptographic problems.
