Cryogenics Mechanical Engineer

Barrios Technology•Houston, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

Barrios Technology is seeking a Cryogenics Mechanical Engineer to join its team with teammate company Bastion and support NASA’s deep space exploration work. The role involves engineering design and analysis for cryogenic components, vacuum-jacketed and warm piping systems, and related mechanical systems. It also supports facility operations for 20 K helium systems and 80 K liquid nitrogen storage and distribution systems. This is an on-site role. The engineer will develop procurement and fabrication documentation, coordinate with vendors and fabricators, participate in design reviews, and witness testing. The position includes providing troubleshooting, maintenance guidance, and technical oversight during equipment assembly, installation, and commissioning. The engineer will also contribute to safety reviews, hazard analyses, operational procedures, engineering review boards, and technical collaboration and presentations. The role requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and at least two years of relevant experience. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation; eligibility requirements for access to classified information may apply. The work is generally in an office but may involve indoor or outdoor work, test-facility access, commuting, and travel to other installations. It may require extended sitting, lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and schedule adjustments to meet peak periods and surge requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • At least two years of experience in the field or a related area.
  • Minimum two years of progressively responsible mechanical design experience.
  • Experience with mechanical stress analysis of pressure components, mechanical equipment design, and hands-on system development.
  • Knowledge of machining, welding, piping, and pipe-fitting practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and proficiency with MS Office tools.
  • Ability to positively interact with and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information if subject to a government security investigation.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere and maintain professional behavior that supports productivity, teamwork, and cooperation.
  • Ability to work outside the normal schedule and adjust the schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Regular attendance in accordance with the established work schedule.
  • May require sitting for extended periods, lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and sufficient mobility to enter test-facility areas as needed.
  • May require commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Cryogenic piping system design, fluid-flow and heat-transfer analysis, and knowledge of cryogenic materials.
  • Experience with cold boxes, phase separators, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, valves, and other cryogenic plant equipment.
  • Familiarity with ASME BPVC VIII, ASME B31.3, NFPA, and OSHA requirements.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD and analysis tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, and ANSYS.
  • Knowledge of high-vacuum systems and helium mass spectrometry leak detection.
  • Experience designing and sizing plant components, including heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, piping, valves, and relief devices.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling using Creo, SolidWorks, and/or AutoCAD Inventor.
  • Familiarity with national building codes, NFPA, and OSHA requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering design and analysis for cryogenic components, vacuum-jacketed and warm piping systems, and associated mechanical systems.
  • Develop procurement and fabrication documentation, including Statements of Work, specifications, and engineering drawings.
  • Coordinate with vendors and fabricators, participate in design reviews, and witness key testing activities.
  • Support facility operations for 20 K helium systems and 80 K liquid nitrogen storage and distribution systems.
  • Provide troubleshooting, maintenance guidance, and technical oversight during equipment assembly, installation, and commissioning.
  • Prepare and participate in safety reviews, hazard analyses, operational procedures, and engineering review boards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams and present design and technical findings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
