About The Position

The Crude Market Research Sr. Advisor II is a high impact front office role that is integral to the success of the crude trading team at Phillips 66. This role provides market fundamentals, short/medium term supply/demand analysis, and trader support for the Crude supply and trading function primarily in North America, but linked to the wider global region. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the lead market strategists, regional analysts and trading teams to develop and maintain models and balances that will create short term tradable insights and longer term strategic insights.

Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 5 or more years of commercial/trading or related experience in the energy industry
  • Exposure to advanced quantitative platforms (e.g. Python, Claude code, Dataiku, etc.)
  • Intermediate or greater proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with supply and demand modeling for Crude
  • Knowledge of Commercial trading businesses
  • Understanding of broader commodity markets (Crude, Gasoline, Distillates, NGLs)
  • Proficient in DataBricks, SQL, and Power BI
  • Experience in Machine Learning
  • Ability to code in Visual Basic, Python, and/or R
  • Ability to incorporate AI and AI prompting into daily analysis
  • Ability to synthesize data into useful information, and articulate it in an easy-to-understand format
  • Proactive in problem identification and resolution, can provide creative solutions to complex issues
  • Refining/petrochemical knowledge
  • Proficiency with statistical modeling software, Access or other database software, and economic model development

Responsibilities

  • Understand key trading opportunities of North America’s Crude trading group at all times and work to suggest/evaluate additional analysis to ensure all aspects of an opportunity are understood.
  • Develop and maintain supply and demand models. This will involve working closely with trading to understand the market and trends, incorporate downtime, seasonal cycles, macroeconomic variables and utilize import/export data to ensure the models are accurate and accepted by trading. Identify market anomalies and communicate to trading on what physical market and forward market changes might occur.
  • Provide market analytical support for Commercial by using supply and demand modeling, arbitrage modeling and macro-economic data to develop a medium term (6-12 months) view of the market.
  • Draw on fundamental and technical data as appropriate to develop forward view predictive models.
  • Work with Commercial Data Science to create econometric analysis and models.
  • Stay abreast of external market analyst views and incorporate these views and analysis into internal fundamental analysis to create a competitive edge vs. external views.
  • Understand and communicate geopolitical and regulatory events/factors which impact price movements.
  • Maintain and improve existing arbitrage models.
  • Aid information gathering process and development of presentation packages as needed.
  • Share knowledge freely and improve peer group understanding of own niche markets. Drive improvement of existing forecast models.
  • Lead ad-hoc projects and analysis around market fundamentals (including infrastructure changes) to support trade ideas.
  • Support development and organization of the analyst presentation materials for the periodic global trader meetings held throughout the year.
