About The Position

The Crowd Control Street Maintenance Crew Leader performs responsible technical and skilled work leading and participating in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, sidewalks, storm drainage systems, rights-of-way, and other public infrastructure. This position supervises a work crew, coordinates daily operations, and ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Town standards. In addition to overseeing street maintenance activities, this position supports crowd control operations and assists with the setup and breakdown of Town-sponsored special events to ensure public safety and efficient traffic flow. Work requires independent judgment, leadership, and the ability to coordinate personnel, equipment, and materials while maintaining a safe work environment. Employees work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may be required to respond to after-hours call backs, emergency situations, and snow or ice events. Work is performed under regular supervision and evaluated through inspections of work quality, productivity, safety practices, and adherence to schedules.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Five to seven years of experience in street construction, maintenance, and repair or right-of-way maintenance and repair
  • Experience operating heavy construction equipment
  • Lead worker or crew leadership experience OR An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (Class B)
  • Right-of-Way assignments require possession of a valid North Carolina Pesticide Operator's License

Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, sidewalks, storm drainage systems, rights-of-way, and other public infrastructure
  • Supervise daily work assignments, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to established standards
  • Coordinate personnel, equipment, materials, and resources to maximize operational effectiveness
  • Ensure crews have the appropriate tools, equipment, materials, and traffic control devices before reporting to job sites
  • Monitor work zones and ensure compliance with all safety regulations and proper traffic control practices
  • Coordinate work activities with contractors and participate in project planning and workflow scheduling
  • Respond to citizen concerns and service requests related to street maintenance and public works operations
  • Train, coach, and evaluate crew members while promoting a safe and productive work environment
  • Complete work orders, estimate material needs, and order supplies for assigned projects
  • Operate heavy construction equipment in confined areas requiring precision and skill
  • Participate in snow and ice removal operations during inclement weather
  • Serve in the absence of the Street Maintenance Supervisor as assigned
  • Assist with crowd control and pedestrian safety measures during festivals, parades, community events, and other public gatherings
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of Town-sponsored special events, including installing and removing temporary traffic control and safety equipment
  • Perform other related duties as required
