About The Position

Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places as streets and schools. This role is responsible for ensuring the safety of students and adults crossing streets near Cherry Creek High School. Duties include directing traffic, escorting pedestrians, communicating rules, distributing traffic control signs, and reporting incidents.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Wear appropriate clothing such as light colored slacks, light colored shirts, and a safety vest.
  • Average intelligence.
  • Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant drivers.
  • Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement.
  • Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously.
  • Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury.
  • Mental alertness.
  • Neat appearance.

  • An overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.
  • Intermediate knowledge of proper bicycle/pedestrian practices.
  • Ability to adhere to Colorado Department of Transportation requirements: not eating, smoking, using other tobacco products, or consuming beverages while on duty; not patronizing liquor establishments while in uniform; not using radios (other than official two-way radio), headphones, or portable audio players, nor reading books, magazines, newspapers, or other materials while on duty; mobile communication device use only in an emergency and never while crossing children.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.
  • Colorado state identification card.

Responsibilities

  • Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.
  • Stay within the crosswalk and never cross diagonally.
  • Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets.
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults.
  • Distribute traffic control signs and markers at designated points.
  • Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals.
  • Report incidents involving students to the building principal.
  • Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals, and report infractions to appropriate supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
