The Crossing Guard guides or controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic at streets and schools, helping students and other pedestrians cross safely. The guard directs or escorts pedestrians within crosswalks, monitors traffic for safe crossing opportunities, communicates crossing rules, distributes traffic-control signs and markers, and uses signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals to direct traffic or warn of hazards. The position also includes reporting student incidents and traffic-signal violations to the appropriate supervisor, along with other related duties as assigned. Duties may vary by location and academic year. The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Colorado state identification card, and completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting. Candidates must meet Colorado Department of Transportation minimum qualifications, including good physical condition, effective communication, alertness, dependability, and a strong sense of responsibility for student safety. Appropriate clothing includes light-colored slacks and shirts and a safety vest. While on duty, guards must follow specified conduct restrictions, including limits on eating, tobacco, beverages, personal audio devices, reading materials, and mobile-device use. The position involves extended standing and walking, frequent bending and signaling, occasional lifting, pulling, and pushing, and repetitive motions. It requires visual and auditory capabilities, speaking, blowing a whistle, stepping up and down curbs, and holding a handheld stop paddle above the head. The guard is always exposed to outdoor weather and usually works in a noisy environment. The position reports to the School Principal or designee.
