About The Position

Reporting to the Manager of By-law Services or designate, the Crossing Guard is responsible for safely escorting and assisting children and adults across designated roadways and intersections.

Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent.
  • Ability to follow directions and instructions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff.
  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
  • Good verbal communication, customer service, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, judgement, and time management skills.
  • Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
  • Possess the sufficient physical ability and mobility to stand, walk, and lift and hold a handheld stop sign overhead for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; walk on uneven terrain, loose soil, and sloped surfaces; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations; to operate equipment and vehicle.
  • Good mobility, steady balance, the ability to lift and hold a stop sign overhead, and the ability to effectively hear and see on-coming traffic at a safe distance.
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts as stated.
  • To learn, understand and practice standard Town operating procedures.
  • To be familiar with and comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations; and the Towns Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • To take every possible precaution to protect themselves and fellow workers from health and safety hazards and unsafe situations.
  • To report unsafe acts or conditions to their supervisor or a Health and Safety Committee Representative.
  • To report any occupational injury or illness immediately to their supervisor.
  • To use personal protective equipment, where required.
  • To report any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with members of the public, specifically children, and a proven record of reliability is an asset.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C or willingness to become certified, an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assists members of the public by safely escorting them across the streets as determined by the Town.
  • Maintains a positive public image at all times while on duty, including wearing the required personal protective equipment.
  • Works to educate members of the public on traffic safety regulations and best practices in high-traffic areas and promotes safe use of pedestrian crossings.
  • Monitors and reports any observed problems or safety concerns arising at the assigned crosswalk or pedestrian crossing to the Manager or designate.
  • Serves as a resource for members of the public regarding traffic issues.
  • Obeys all traffic safety regulations, follows all Town policies and procedures, and ensures all health and safety regulations are upheld.
  • Works in a respectful, friendly, and courteous manner and communicates effectively with co-workers, supervisors, elected officials, and the general public.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous learning, modeling inclusive behaviours, and proactively managing bias.
