About The Position

Crossing Guards are assigned at various locations throughout Hamden for the purpose of crossing school children at intersections near public and private school buildings. These intersections are carefully selected with a focus on levels of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Requirements

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
  • Ability to learn to operate crossing guard equipment safely and effectively
  • Ability to send, receive and follow instructions on a radio/cell phone
  • Ability to instruct children ages 5-12 on basic safety procedures related to crossing streets
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive during working hours
  • Ability to remain calm and use good judgment in emergency situations
  • Ability to work / stand in the outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, first aid certification
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, C.P.R. Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Some experience working with children is desirable

Responsibilities

  • Provide crossing guard services at assigned location
  • Assist school children crossing busy streets and intersections
  • Assist general public crossing streets as needed
  • Ensure children cross street only when safe
  • Stop vehicles by using mechanical signals and hand held stop signs
  • Control students while waiting for traffic to clear
  • Report license numbers of vehicles in violation of school crosswalk-related traffic laws to supervisor
  • Report suspicious vehicles or strangers loitering near schools
  • Ensure that children are aware of proper safety rules when crossing streets
  • Instruct children in basic safety techniques when crossing streets
  • Greet the general public courteously
  • Answer questions and provide information related to crossing guard programs
  • Assist public in crossing street or providing directions as needed
  • Remain visible to the public during working hours by standing at assigned posts
  • Perform related duties as required
