About The Position

Under the direction of the Public Safety Department, the position of Crossing Guard will be responsible for the safe crossing of school children at designated City locations. This job description is currently under review as part of the City’s Meet and Confer process and may be subject to change.

Requirements

• No previous experience is required.
• Knowledge of basic safety rules for crossing streets and for ensuring child and pedestrian safety.
• Ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner with children.
• Ability to read, understand, and interpret safety rules.
• Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Good health and emotional stability to a level necessary to perform the essential job duties.
• The ability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time.
• The ability to work outdoors in various kinds of weather.
• Normal vision and hearing correctable with glasses and hearing aids.

Nice To Haves

• Working with children is desirable.
• Bilingual capabilities in Spanish and English is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Direct the actions of children and traffic at street intersections and cross walk areas to assist in the control of safe crossing.
• Report hazardous conditions to the Public Safety Department and appropriate authorities such as traffic light malfunctions; report suspicious activities or vehicles; report behavioral issues such as fighting; report frequent vehicle violations such as speeding and not stopping.
• Make safety presence known via City issued signs and identifiable uniforms at all times.
• Related duties as required.
