About The Position

Tacoma Public Schools is hiring an Hourly Crossing Guard at Lister. The position monitors elementary students at crosswalks and helps them cross streets safely. The expected start date is as soon as possible, and the pay rate is $17.35 per hour. Hours and schedule will be determined by the building administrator, with a maximum of two hours per day; hours may be split between one hour before school and one hour after school.

The role works with students in indoor and outdoor settings. It requires the physical ability to assist children and may involve exposure to infectious diseases and inclement weather. Completion of district training for school crossing guards is highly desirable. The position requires knowledge of building policies and procedures related to crosswalk safety, cooperation with building staff, fairness when dealing with students, and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with people in a multicultural, diverse socioeconomic setting. No license or special requirement is listed.

Responsibilities

• Stop oncoming traffic using a flag so students can cross safely; monitor traffic flow and identify gaps to minimize disruption when stopping vehicles.
• Monitor students’ activities and behavior as they approach the crosswalk, remaining alert to potentially unsafe situations to prevent accidents or injuries.
• Report inappropriate student behavior and vehicles that fail to stop when signaled.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
