About The Position

Under the direction of the Public Safety Department, the position of Crossing Guard will be responsible for the safe crossing of school children at designated City locations. This role involves directing the actions of children and traffic at street intersections and crosswalk areas to ensure safe crossings. The Crossing Guard is also responsible for reporting hazardous conditions, suspicious activities, behavioral issues, and frequent vehicle violations to the appropriate authorities. A visible safety presence must be maintained at all times through the use of City-issued signs and identifiable uniforms.

Requirements

  • Basic safety rules for crossing streets and pedestrian safety.
  • Communicate effectively and in a positive manner with children.
  • Read, understand, and interpret safety rules.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities.
  • A valid First Aid and CPR certificate is required and may be obtained through the City if employment is offered.
  • Good health and emotional stability to a level necessary to perform the essential job duties.
  • The ability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time.
  • The ability to work outdoors in various kinds of weather.
  • Normal vision and hearing correctable with glasses and hearing aids.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual capabilities in Spanish & English is desirable, but not required.
  • Previous experience working with children is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the actions of children and traffic at street intersections and cross walk areas to assist in the control of safe crossing.
  • Report hazardous conditions to the Public Safety Department and appropriate authorities such as traffic light malfunctions.
  • Report suspicious activities or vehicles.
  • Report behavioral issues such as fighting.
  • Report frequent vehicle violations such as speeding and not stopping.
  • Make safety presence known via City issued signs and identifiable uniforms at all times.
