About The Position

The City of Pico Rivera strives to support and enhance a high quality of life for the residents, businesses and visitors by providing well planned, environmentally sensitive, cost-effective infrastructure and services to promote public health, personal safety and transportation. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for residents through responsive, efficient, and effective delivery of services to every neighborhood and by reflecting a can-do attitude with our customers and stakeholders. The Parks and Recreation Department oversees Parks and Programs, REACH, Senior Services, Contract Classes, Media and Communications, Special Events, Transportation, and the Pico Rivera Golf Course. The amenities provided by the Parks and Recreation Department are enjoyed by thousands of people every year. The amenities include 100 acres of parks and open spaces, swimming pool, athletic fields, walking paths, Senior Center, and batting cages. Under direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Crossing Guard/Substitute Crossing Guard may be assigned to posts throughout the City when schools are in session. Hours vary depending on post assignment. A Crossing Guard assists pedestrians to safely walk or bicycle to and from school when crossing public intersections. A Crossing Guard identifies gaps in traffic and leads children across the crosswalk. A Crossing Guard does not direct traffic.

Requirements

Ability to communicate with and supervise children
Read, speak, write and understand the English language
Follow instructions and demonstrate good common sense
Interact effectively with general public including parents and school personnel
Possess dependable means of transportation to get to and from work sites
Available to fill a vacancy on short notice, as needed
Must have the means to receive telephone calls and messages
Successfully complete the California School Crossing Guard Four Part Training Course and Test
Applicant must be at least 18 years of age
Certification in Infant/Child/Adult CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Community First Aid and Safety from a nationally accredited organization (within 30 days of hire and maintained throughout employment)

Nice To Haves

Graduation from high school is desired.
Prior paid or volunteer experience with children is desired.
Bilingual in Spanish is desired.

Responsibilities

Assist children in crossing at designated crosswalks to ensure safe crossing to and from school.
Must be able to identify hazardous conditions that compromise the safety of the children and report to supervisor accordingly.
Interact and communicate effectively with community stakeholders including school personnel, parents, children and colleagues.
Maintain cooperative working relationships with other crossing guards and with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to read, understand and apply safety rules and regulations established.
Wear agency uniform and must utilize high visibility vest and approved STOP sign paddle at all times while on duty.
Lift and control a STOP sign paddle repeatedly.
Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Safely step on and off street curbs.
Demonstrate good judgment and follow instructions while providing for the safety of pedestrians.
Work outside in seasonal weather conditions.
Be punctual and report to work on assigned work days.
Be available to fill a vacancy on short notice, as needed.
