About The Position

Haverhill Public Schools is seeking a Cross Country Assistant Coach for Boys & Girls. This role involves promoting positive values such as loyalty, leadership, dedication, integrity, physical fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation, and personal responsibility among student-athletes. The coach will implement codes of conduct, maintain knowledge of game rules (including MIAA regulations), develop training programs, and ensure the proper maintenance of athletic equipment and uniforms. Responsibilities also include traveling with the team, adhering to financial policies, completing injury reports, maintaining records, collecting necessary student forms, enforcing school policies, supervising student behavior, and ensuring a safe environment. The coach must attend annual meetings, review handbooks and laws, and demonstrate a commitment to protecting student athletes. A proven ability to enforce rules and a strong understanding of track and field technical aspects are essential. The role requires professional and friendly interaction with students, staff, parents, administrators, and the public, and immediate reporting of disciplinary issues. The coach will perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to advocate the importance of education and school community.
  • Valid Driver’s License - required
  • First Aid/CPR - required

Nice To Haves

  • Successful previous experience in track as a player or coach - preferred
  • Track coaching experience - preferred
  • MIAA Coaches Certification - preferred

Responsibilities

  • Promotes by example, loyalty, leadership, dedication, integrity, physical fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation and personal responsibility.
  • Implements codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents of the HHS track team.
  • Ability to work the expected hours to include arriving prior to the student athlete arrival and departure times.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of game and competition rules and has the ability to educate student-athletes to share in that understanding, including the rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
  • Develops appropriate training programs and practice sessions.
  • Ensure the proper cleaning, storage and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms are adhered to in conjunction with the Head Coach and Athletic Director.
  • Travels with student-athletes on the team bus both to and from meets.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of strategies and rules of track.
  • Adheres to all financial policies of the district in the regards to the collection, disbursement of money, expenses and receipts.
  • Works with the Head Coach, Athletic Trainer(s) and completes injury reports for any student injured within 24 hours even if the athlete does not see a physician.
  • Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork and required team and individual statistics in a specified time and manner.
  • Works with the Head Coach and Athletic Department staff to ensure the proper forms including physical, attendance, parent consent and medical information is collected prior to the start of the season.
  • Enforces the policies and procedures of the Haverhill School Committee and the Haverhill High School Student Handbook.
  • Supervises appropriate behavior of students from arrival to departure, both on and off the field, including the locker room, buses, practices, and at home and away games.
  • Maintains a safe environment and facilities for all student athletes at all times.
  • Attends the annual HHS all Coaches meeting.
  • Reviews the HHS Coaches Handbook annually.
  • Reviews and signs the Massachusetts Anti-Hazing Law Form annually.
  • Demonstrates commitment to protect student athletes from inappropriate conduct.
  • Proven ability to enforce all rules in all sport-related activities and venues.
  • Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects and procedures pertinent to track including rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
  • Proven ability to work in a professional and friendly manner with various contingencies; i.e. students, teachers, parents, administrators, boosters, media, officials and the school community and public.
  • Reports to the Head Coach, Athletic Director and Haverhill High School Principal any disciplinary issues immediately.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director, Principal and the Superintendent of Schools and/or his/her designee.
