Operates, monitors, maintains, and responds to abnormal conditions in multiple facility systems, areas include: Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, and Building Monitoring and Control. This role involves working with contractors and consultants for system expansions, corrections, and upgrades, tracking and completing preventive and predictive maintenance schedules, and ensuring data center operational efficiency. The technician will also assist with managing data center systems to avoid unplanned events, analyze data trends, and develop technical writing skills for maintenance procedures. Responsibilities also include installing hot and cold aisle isolation barriers, maintaining client cages, and managing consumable items and parts.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated technical ability applicable to data centre operations, innovative thinking cross-functionally, including integrated systems and information technology (IT) experience.
  • Entry-level knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in a data centre environment, including electrical distribution and layout, transformers, PLC's, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, STS', ATS', PDU's, Chilled Water Systems, CRAC/CRAH's, Pre-Action Sprinkler Systems.
  • Entry-level knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues as well as building codes in regard to fire life safety.
  • Entry-level knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e. lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations).
  • Ability to rapidly learn and use PC based, integrated critical monitoring and control systems.
  • Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a high stress, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations at the data centre.
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays, and on-call support.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with verbal, visual, and listening skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Relevant high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Relevant advanced qualification or equivalent work-related experience required.
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or the ability to obtain one after hire required.
  • Entry-level or basic demonstrated experience in a similar role, preferably gained within a data centre facilities environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, monitors, maintains, and responds to abnormal conditions in multiple facility systems, including Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, and Building Monitoring and Control.
  • Manages data centre cooling solutions, including chilled water systems, HVAC systems (rooftop units, split units, DX, CRAC/CRAH units), humidification systems, and Kyoto Cooling.
  • Oversees electrical/critical power distribution from utility/generator main switchgear through UPS systems and distribution to customer load, including load bank operations.
  • Maintains all water supply piping, fixtures, meters, backflow preventers, water heaters, boilers, and plumbing fixtures, as well as internal and roof drain systems.
  • Ensures operations and user knowledge of electrical and mechanical controls systems.
  • Maintains wet sprinkler systems and pre-action sprinkler systems, including their associated fire detection devices and control systems.
  • Works with contractors and consultants for all system expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
  • Works with relevant teams to determine building maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, control, and fire life safety systems.
  • Assists relevant teams to track, document, and complete an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance schedule.
  • Ensures data centre operates at maximum operational efficiency by analyzing operating conditions, recommending new approaches, and improving efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Assists with the management of data centre systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting events.
  • Assists with the management of data floor and back of house/hotel load mechanical and electrical loading capacity to ensure best use of available power and optimal cooling system efficiency.
  • Performs data trending, tracking, and analysis.
  • Provides feedback to relevant teams on the effectiveness of existing standards and processes.
  • Develops technical writing skills in regard to research and development of procedures for preventative or corrective maintenance activities.
  • Installs hot and cold aisle isolation barriers.
  • Maintains client cages on the data floor.
  • Orders, tracks, and restocks facility-related consumable items and parts, ensuring performance at the lowest possible cost.
  • Ensures regular, predictable attendance.
