About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist to join their Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Team. This role involves providing critical care to neonatal and pediatric patients during ambulance and fixed-wing transport. The therapist will assess patients, utilize established transport protocols, and manage respiratory needs including airway management, medications, NIV, and invasive ventilations. The position is based out of the Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Team’s Clarksville Base after orientation. The Critical Care Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Team at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is a specialized, CAMTS accredited team providing ground and fixed-wing transport to critically ill patients. The team comprises highly trained respiratory therapists, registered nurses, and AEMTs who work collaboratively. This role offers the opportunity to enhance clinical skills and improve patient outcomes during critical moments. Team members practice at the highest level of their scope and cross-train into the nursing role. The team is supported by strong leadership and educators dedicated to a positive work environment, quality patient care, and continuous learning and development. The Nursing Educator and Respiratory Quality Educator work closely with medical directors, the transport team, and leadership to provide necessary education and hands-on training. Requirements

  • LIC-Registered Respiratory Therapist - Tennessee
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • 1 year of experience
  • Graduate of an approved discipline specific program

Responsibilities

  • Provide critical care to neonatal and pediatric patients during ambulance and fixed wing transport.
  • Assess patients and use established transport protocols to treat patients’ medical conditions.
  • Critically think and adapt to changing environment of transport while providing patient care.
  • Manage patient’s respiratory needs via airway management, medications, NIV, and invasive ventilations.
  • Initiate and manage per protocol during ground transport: Mechanical Ventilation NIV, including HFNC and Bubble CPAP, Nitric Oxide, High Frequency Ventilation, and Respiratory Medications.
  • Troubleshoot transport equipment.
  • Work with the Registered Nurse and EMT on transport to provide patient care.
  • Perform Arterial punctures.
  • Perform Intubations.
  • Maintain competencies required by institution, department, and CAMTs.
  • Perform lab tests for blood gases and glucose checks per POCT guidelines and interpret results.
  • Collaborate with receiving units at MCJCHV and referring facilities to coordinate patient transport.
  • Be knowledgeable in nursing role and able to perform those duties within scope of practice to patients during transport.
