About The Position

Children’s Mercy is a leading pediatric hospital, recognized by U.S. News & World Report for eleven consecutive years. Located in Kansas City, the hospital is a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center, meeting the highest standards for safety and outcomes. The Operating Room at Children's Mercy Hospital exclusively employs RNs for circulating, scrubbing, and RN First Assisting roles across 18 operating rooms at the downtown campus and 4 at the Kansas campus. As a level-one trauma center, they handle a wide range of surgical sub-specialties and patient ages from neonates to young adults with a 1:1 nurse to patient ratio. Critical care registered nurses manage illness and promote health for patients requiring intensive care, utilizing the nursing process for safe, high-quality, comprehensive, and age-appropriate care. They also provide patient and family education and advocacy. Requirements

  • Associate's Degree ADN Required. Current employees hired before September 1, 2013 are grandfathered and permitted to continue in the direct care nursing role.
  • No Experience necessary / On-the-Job Training
  • One of the following: Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
  • One of the following: Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
  • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO
  • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred for all nurses hired after September 1, 2013. Nurses hired after this date without a BSN must complete their degree within 5 years of their hire date.
  • Specialty Nursing Certification encouraged for all eligible nurses Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age-appropriate nursing care for patients undergoing Level 0 to 6 surgical procedures in the hospital setting, including managing emergent, complex clinical situations appropriately.
  • Meets the educational and informational needs of the patient and family and advocates for their needs.
  • Maintains an environment that is safe, comfortable, efficient, and family centered during the perioperative encounter.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence for practice to expand personal professional knowledge, enhance role performance, and improve nursing care quality.
