About The Position

Duke Emergency Medicine is seeking Critical Care Advanced Practice Providers to join our nationally recognized team at Duke University Hospital, a premier tertiary referral center and Level I Trauma Center serving patients across North Carolina and the surrounding region. Our state-of-the-art Emergency Department is designed to support high-acuity, high-impact care and includes: Five adult emergency care areas supporting diverse and complex patient populations. Advanced, in-department CT scanners, X-ray suites, and point of care ultrasound equipment for rapid access to diagnostics. A 24-bed Clinical Evaluation Unit (CEU) focused on efficient ED observation and enhancing patient flow. A dedicated 13-bed Pediatric Emergency Department. A 7,000-square-foot ambulance bay supporting high-volume EMS arrivals. Requirements

  • Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • BLS/ACLS certification required
  • ATLS certification required to participate in trauma care (may obtain after start date)
  • Must have current or compact RN licensure in the State of North Carolina.
  • Must have a national certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of North Carolina.
  • Must have active certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • DEA licensure required.
  • Candidates must have at least one year of advanced practice Emergency Medicine experience or have completed a residency/fellowship in Emergency Medicine.

Nice To Haves

  • Critical Care / Acute Care NP Master's or completion of ACNP/CCNP post-Master's program strongly preferred.
  • Certification as an Acute Care or Critical Care Nurse Practitioner strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with attending physician(s), provides direct clinical services for critically ill patients according to established protocols and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards.
  • Performs triage, physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care of patients, and provides direct patient care services.
  • Formulates and implements treatment plans for acute illness management and observation care in collaboration with the attending physician(s).
  • Analyzes clinical practice patterns so to provide the best medical care and to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to supervising physician, nursing staff, patient resource manager, home health agency, and other relevant healthcare providers.
  • Provides timely documentation in the electronic medical record of all relevant data including results of diagnostic tests; laboratory results; patients’ condition and response to therapies/interventions; communications with physician colleagues.
  • Contributes to excellence in patient care, teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and to the advanced practice profession.
