About The Position

The Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) is a clinical role embedded within Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) and is responsible for conducting emergency mental health screenings and crisis assessments for individuals presenting to or referred from the Emergency Department. The CIS collaborates with the on-call psychiatrist to determine the appropriate level of care and disposition for each patient. The CIS manages all related documentation and coordination and operates within a 24/7 service environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related behavioral health field required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of professional experience in a psychiatric or behavioral health setting is required.
  • Crisis assessment, de-escalation, and trauma-informed engagement.
  • Knowledge of DSM-5 and ICD-10 as applied to screening and level-of-care determination.
  • Familiarity with NJ Mental Health Code (N.J.A.C. 10:31), N.J.S.A. 30:4-27, and 42 CFR Part 2
  • Understanding of mental illness and substance use disorders across the continuum of care.
  • Knowledge of community resources, housing support, and social service systems in Hudson County and surrounding areas
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and apply clinical information to determine appropriate disposition
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and priorities in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
  • Collaborative, team-oriented approach
  • Professional conduct and maintenance of appropriate boundaries

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related behavioral health field preferred.
  • Prior experience in a hospital-based PES or emergency services setting preferred.
  • Experience with involuntary commitment procedures under NJ law preferred.
  • Clinical licensure (LSW, LCSW, LAC, LPC) a plus but not required.
