About The Position

This role is for a Crisis Clinician in the Emergency Department (ED) at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL. The clinician will be responsible for identifying presenting problems, assessing patients, and arranging safe disposition to appropriate levels of care (inpatient vs. outpatient). This includes conducting screenings and assessments, documenting diagnoses and applications for 5150 detentions, and maintaining knowledge of community resources for referrals. The clinician will communicate patient admissions and transfers, coordinate admissions to Behavioral Health Services, and orient new employees. They will implement department policies, function as a Patient Advocate, and interact effectively with physicians, clinical staff, Business Office, Admissions staff, patient care units, and ancillary departments. The role requires attending mandatory classes, communicating unit rules to patients and families, complying with mandated reporting requirements, and responding to evaluation requests within one hour. The clinician will collaborate with colleagues to improve service delivery and hospital operations, maintain composure during stressful interactions, and support facility public relations. They will take initiative on special projects and perform other duties as assigned. This includes observation and direction of patient lifts and mobilization, using professional judgment in safe patient handling, and attending mandatory training in safe lifting techniques. As an ED Crisis Clinician, responsibilities include providing psychological consultation, developing safety plans, and determining the need for a higher level of care. Maintaining clinical medical records is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must have current valid license as a Registered Nurse, MFT, or LCSW issued by the State.
  • Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • DMH certification required for 5150 detentions.

Nice To Haves

  • LPS certification preferred.
  • Three (3) years experience in an Inpatient Psychiatric unit preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies presenting problems, assesses accurately, and arranges safe disposition to appropriate level of care ie inpatient versus outpatient care.
  • Conducts screening and/or assessment in keeping with clinical knowledge and skill level as necessary for efficient and safe disposition of patients.
  • Documents assessment and established diagnosis and application for 5150 appropriately in medical record.
  • Maintains current community resources and provides appropriate referrals to patients served.
  • Clearly and correctly communicates patient admissions, transfers, and unusual occurrences to all necessary personnel including admitting psychiatrist.
  • Collaboration with Charge Nurses, coordinates the admission of patients to Behavioral Health Services based on diagnosis and patient needs.
  • Orients new employees to the Assessment policies and procedures, conveying accurate information in a supportive and courteous manner.
  • Implements the department’s policies and procedures, ensuring the overall ongoing quality of the services provided.
  • Assists in back-up training as needed.
  • Functions as a Patient Advocate adhering to Patients’ Rights and LPS statutes.
  • Interacts effectively with physicians and other clinical staff, supporting philosophy and implementation of programs.
  • Works effectively with Business Office and Admissions staff, Emergency Services, all patient care units and ancillary departments demonstrating courtesy and cooperation in all interactions.
  • Attends and stays current with all mandatory classes
  • Communicates unit rules and policies clearly to patients and family members and seek feedback to assure a clear understanding.
  • Complies with mandated reporting requirements related to neglect and abuse in all age groups served.
  • Responds to request for evaluation within one hour or less.
  • Collaborates with employees in department to continually improve services delivery or hospital operations.
  • Maintains composure during stressful interactions.
  • Supports facility public relations and community education efforts.
  • Promotes and inspires confidence from co-workers and supervisors by performing and communicating in a professional manner with every interpersonal contact.
  • Takes initiative to complete special projects in a timely manner and completed other related duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for the observation and direction of patient lifts, mobilization, and shall participate as needed in patient handling.
  • Uses professional judgment and clinical assessment in safe patient handling that are consistent with Safe Patient Handling policies.
  • Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling, trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1. Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation 3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.
  • Performs other duties as requested or required.
  • Providing Psychological consultation, developing safety plans, and working with patients, families, and other teams to determine if a patient needs a higher level of care.
