About The Position

The New York City Police Department's Police Laboratory analyzes evidence submitted in relation to crimes. This evidence can include firearms, controlled substances, clothing, or anything deemed probative to determining events and persons at a crime scene. After analysis, resultant paperwork must be scanned and submitted to District Attorney's offices for potential use in trials. Some tasks have time constraints due to court needs. The Police Laboratory is seeking two (2) qualified candidates for Criminalist IV positions. These candidates will be assigned to the Police Laboratory within the Detective Bureau to supervise scientific laboratory analyses and the testing of evidentiary material required in scientific criminal and civil investigations.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
  • For Assignment to Assignment Level I - B: At least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in criminalistics, forensic science or analytic chemistry, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • For Assignment Level II: One year of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B; or one additional year of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of two years of such experience; or a satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling two years of experience.
  • For Assignment Level III: Two years of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B and/or II; or two additional years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of three years of such experience; or a satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling three years of experience.
  • For Assignment to Assignment Level IV: Three years of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B, II, and /or III; or three additional years of experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of four years of such experience; or a satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling four years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee case management for incoming cases and evidence for assigned section
  • Maintain staff levels, schedule and supervise overtime for subordinates
  • Oversee and/or conduct training of personnel and advise management of training needs when necessary
  • Resolve technical issues, where qualified, and inform management, if required
  • Assess minor issues of testing nonconformance's and ensure they are properly documented, where qualified
  • Identify deviations from the management system or from the procedures for performing laboratory activities, and to evaluate the significance of those deviations
  • Report to laboratory management on the performance of the management system and any need for improvement
  • Assess potential risks and recommend actions to reduce risks
