About The Position

The Criminal Justice Internship provides students pursuing a Criminal Justice degree with the opportunity to work with local Reentry Coalitions, the Division of Probation & Parole, and their local Sheriff’s Office. Interns will assist formerly incarcerated individuals with job seeking, placement, and retention, learn about assets and barriers to the justice-involved, and participate in services that acclimate the justice-impacted back into the community. The goal of this position is to educate a student who will eventually be working in the criminal justice system about the assets, barriers, and gaps that justice-impacted individuals face and projects available to navigate those.

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time/part-time student pursuing a degree in the Criminal Justice field.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, or otherwise be able to travel between agency locations as required for the position.
  • Employment is contingent upon a successful completion of a background check and satisfactory driving record verification.
  • Comfortable interacting with justice-involved individuals (under supervision with the Division of Probation & Parole; currently incarcerated).
  • Strong verbal skills; ability to communicate clearly with participants, staff, and partner agencies.
  • Comfortable making telephone calls to clients and community partners.
  • Ability to document services and interactions accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Basic computer literacy (typing, email, data entry, virtual meetings, Microsoft Office).
  • Comfortable learning new digital tools for tracking services and outcomes.
  • Able to and comfortable with entering correctional centers.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
