Amtrak OIG provides independent oversight of Amtrak’s programs and operations, working to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse. The team consists of auditors, special agents, analysts, forensic examiners, lawyers, and support staff. This role serves as the primary contact and liaison between the Office of Investigations field offices and headquarters. The Desk Officer provides technical advice, coordinates and reviews field office operations and investigative work, and advises leadership on significant investigative developments, field office performance, operational and policy issues, and matters requiring leadership review. The position is crucial for maintaining investigative quality and consistency by monitoring complex and sensitive casework, assessing trends and deficiencies, coordinating headquarters actions, reviewing reports and case management data, and recommending improvements to policies, procedures, internal controls, and investigative practices. The incumbent will provide oversight and guidance to one or more field offices with substantial caseloads of complex investigations, including criminal, contracting, personnel, and ethics matters. This includes sensitive cases that may attract Congressional or media attention. The Desk Officer must stay informed of case developments and ensure that significant issues are escalated to OIG management promptly.
