About The Position

This position is responsible for specialized handling and processing related to crime scenes, evidence, and investigations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Police Captain.

Requirements

  • Associate degree from accredited college or university, or equivalent work experience for consideration
  • Two (2) years related experience and/or training in evidence processing
  • Two (2) years related experience and/ or training the field of Criminal Justice
  • Must possess a valid FL Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of modern office equipment, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of various crime scene processing techniques
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret work related documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply principles of mathematical concepts as applied to this position.
  • Ability to identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions that are in accordance with laws, ordinances, and established principles.
  • Ability to follow and interpret instructions furnished in written and oral format.
  • Ability to handle weapons in a safe manner.
  • Ability to work with extremely confidential property and correspondence
  • Computer skills, including experience in software applications appropriate to this position.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieves evidence from various department locations on a daily basis.
  • Responds to major cases and crime scenes as needed (including irregular or on-call hours) to process and collect evidence.
  • Assists Evidence Supervisor and Evidence Technicians with daily responsibilities to assure compliance, accuracy, and safety.
  • Ensures that incoming evidence is packaged in accordance with agency guidelines.
  • Processes evidence, which includes entering property vouchers into computer, preparing labels for each item, properly and securely packaging, and storing in proper location.
  • Prepares property correspondence to proper personnel.
  • Prepares money sheet for deposit of funds received into evidence.
  • Complies with requests from the State Attorney’s Office, law firms, defendants, and sworn personnel for case information. This includes duplication of audio and videotapes, digital media, and copies of paper evidence for trial.
  • Retrieves evidence from storage and destroys evidence for case closure in accordance with established rules.
  • Maintains a database of closed cases and destruction of evidence.
  • Processes lab requests for the State Attorney’s Office and case agents.
  • Coordinates with courier for delivery to FDLE lab.
  • Processes lab returns to ensure all items are documented for storage and information is distributed to case agents and State Attorney’s Office.
  • Assists with scheduled drug/gun destruction, DEA Drug Take Back Program, and auction.
  • Assists case agents/officers with processing and research of evidence.
  • Documents evidence taken for court/trial purposes.
  • Assists in preparation of quarterly reports.
  • Assists with dual evidence control audits.
  • Perform related work as required. These additional duties may be representative of tasks typically performed by those in a lesser or more advanced job grade.
