About The Position

The Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) will assist with the processing of crime scenes, and in some cases, will be the lead investigator. This role involves assessing the scene, locating evidence, and performing tasks such as marking, photographing, collecting, and packaging evidence to meet unit standards. The CSI will also be responsible for scanning scenes with a 3D scanner and registering those scans in the office. Additionally, they will locate and identify latent prints, entering them into state and national data systems. Evidence processing will occur both at crime scenes and in the lab/vehicle bay. The scope of scenes includes a wide range of crimes such as murder, suspicious deaths, suicides, accidental deaths, shootings, rapes, robberies, burglaries, recovered stolen autos, and more, along with administrative documentation. Maintaining all related equipment is also a key responsibility. The role may also involve fingerprinting and photographing juvenile offenders, applicants, and some adult offenders, as well as photographing ceremonies for the department.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Ability to locate and access evidence on a scene.
  • Ability to mark and photograph evidence.
  • Ability to package and turn in evidence.
  • Ability to document activities on the scene in report form.
  • Ability to document the scene with a 3D scanner.
  • Ability to register 3D scans.
  • Ability to process evidence in a follow-up manner in the bay or lab.
  • Ability to balance, feel, grasp, handle, hear, kneel, lift, use manual dexterity, have mental acuity, pull, push, reach, perform repetitive motions, speak, stand, stoop, talk, see (visual acuity for data analysis, color, depth perception, field of vision, observing facilities, operating vehicles/equipment, close acuity for inspection), and walk.
