About The Position

The Crime Scene and Evidence Technician is responsible for processing crime scenes, which includes identifying, documenting, collecting, and preserving evidence. This role also involves serving as a custodian of evidence and found property, ensuring compliance with all relevant statutes and procedures, and maintaining the chain of custody. The technician will receive, label, log, package, and store evidence, as well as review and document evidence for investigations and court use. Additionally, the position provides advice on evidence procedures to officers and detectives, coordinates evidence transportation and preparation with attorneys, and may be required to attend court to provide testimony. The technician also responds to public inquiries about property, returns property to owners, and prepares unclaimed property for sale or disposal. General clerical duties, report preparation, and evidence inventories are also part of the role. The position requires on-call coverage for off-duty hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, which may involve travel to hazardous locations. The technician will also attend training and assist other law enforcement agencies as directed.

Requirements

  • Must have knowledge of federal, state and local laws as well as legal procedure.
  • Requires gathering, organizing, analyzing, examining or evaluating data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information.
  • Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.
  • Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, obtaining electronic media, copiers, telephones or similar equipment; operates equipment requiring moderate instruction, such as laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Requires basic knowledge of digital cameras/photography in relation to documentation of a crime scene.
  • Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
  • Requires doing specialized technical or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
  • Must be proficient in scientific software, design software, photo imaging software.
  • Requires ability to work rotating and various shift schedules.
  • Associate's degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education with emphasis in forensic science, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
  • Valid Driver's License: With proof of automobile insurance
  • Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record
  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record

Responsibilities

  • Crime scene processing to include; Identifying, documenting, collecting, and preserving materials from a crime scene deemed as evidence by utilizing measuring, testing, and recording instruments and devices such as a digital camera and diagraming equipment.
  • Provides on call coverage for crime scene services during off-duty hours, which includes nights, weekends, holidays, and other off-duty hours. Call-outs may include travelling to hazardous locations.
  • Serves as a custodian of evidence and found and/or recovered property, ensuring compliance with all applicable state statutes, general records schedules, policies and procedures and accreditation standards; maintains chain of custody of evidence.
  • Receives, labels, logs, packages, and stores evidence.
  • Reviews and documents evidence or found property for investigations or use in court.
  • Determines the disposition of evidence to be transferred to officers, owners, and other agencies.
  • Provides advice and direction to patrol officers and detectives on evidence procedures and crime scene documentation.
  • Coordinates and assists in the transportation of evidence for analysis; documents transactions and submits reports to appropriate personnel.
  • Coordinates evidence and case preparation with department officers and prosecution / defense attorneys.
  • Attends court and provides testimony regarding evidence, as required.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding confiscated and recovered property; Interactions include in person, email and by phone; returns property to owners as appropriate and prepares unclaimed property for public sale or disposal.
  • Performs general clerical work, including but not limited to copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Prepares and submits various reports and records as required.
  • Conducts routine and unannounced inventories of evidence and property; maintains related records.
  • Attends training, meetings, seminars, etc., as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies as directed by the Chief of Police or their designee.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
