About The Position

Crewperson 6 - Building Finishes is directly responsible to the Supervisor. This position leads crewpersons, assigns work, plans with building principals, and coordinates with other supervisors. The position maintains, repairs, and enhances interior and exterior finishes of district facilities, with a primary emphasis on painting and surface finishing. Responsibilities include surface preparation, application of coatings, drywall and plaster repair, flooring finishes, ceiling repairs, door and hardware installation, and other general building maintenance activities. The employee is expected to demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, initiative, dependability, and the ability to perform quality work with minimal supervision.

Ability to perform all tasks and work the hours required.
Ability to work indoors in extreme heat or cold and outdoors in inclement weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
Ability to wear proper safety equipment, including respirators and fall-protection equipment, as required while performing job responsibilities.
Attendance at required meetings, training, in-services, and professional development opportunities.
Daily schedule may fluctuate to accommodate deadlines and delivery of services; ability to work overtime on short notice and perform emergency-response work may be required.

Ability to read and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
Possess general construction knowledge and the ability to build and work from scaffolding.

Exposure to paints, coatings, solvents, adhesives, dust, fumes, mists, chemicals, and construction materials.
Advanced knowledge of painting materials, coatings, finishes, surface-preparation methods, and application techniques.
Knowledge of building-repair materials, construction practices, and finish systems.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications and estimate time and materials for projects.
Ability to work independently and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
Strong planning, organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including when Supervisor discretion is needed.
Ability to perform as an effective team player and maintain positive customer relations.
Basic computer proficiency and the ability to effectively use Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Nice To Haves

High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Minimum of three years of painting, finishing, building maintenance, construction, or related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Lead crewpersons, assign work, plan with building principals, and coordinate work with other supervisors as directed.
Prepare interior and exterior surfaces for painting through cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, priming, and masking.
Apply paints, stains, varnishes, sealers, epoxies, and other protective coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
Maintain and restore decorative and protective finishes on walls, ceilings, doors, windows, lockers, trim, masonry, metal surfaces, and other building components.
Perform interior painting of classrooms, offices, corridors, gyms, cafeterias, and other occupied spaces, ensuring areas are clean and operational upon completion.
Perform exterior painting of doors, window systems, siding, overhangs, fences, railings, gates, and other facility components.
Refinish gymnasium and stage floors, apply athletic game lines, and maintain painted surfaces in athletic and playground areas.
Lay out and stripe parking lots, safety markings, traffic-control markings, and other designated areas.
Remove, repair, or cover graffiti on district property.
Paint and maintain miscellaneous equipment and structures, including flagpoles, safety rails, playground equipment, curbs, and safety zones.
Repair and finish drywall, plaster, and other wall systems to paint-ready condition.
Repair and replace ceiling systems, including T-bar, lay-in, glue-up, and specialty ceilings.
Install and repair wood and metal stud framing systems, wood and metal doors, frames, and associated hardware.
Repair and replace ceramic tile, quarry tile, floor tile, and other finish materials; use leveling and layout equipment to ensure accurate installation.
Assist with general building-repair projects and facility-improvement initiatives as assigned.
Perform mandatory snow removal as assigned by the Supervisor.
Perform all work safely and report hazardous conditions immediately.
Assume responsibility for all tools, supplies, and materials; maintain and organize the shop and order materials for projects.
Maintain required licenses and certifications and current knowledge of materials, equipment, industry best practices, and technical information and policies concerning this Facilities area.
Maintain records and documentation required for efficient unit functioning, including invoices, work orders, and other paperwork.
Assist in maintaining positive public relations, recognizing that a Crewperson 6 represents both the Facilities Division and Wichita Public Schools.
Cooperate with other trades and departments to complete projects efficiently and professionally; maintain open lines of communication.
Support district goals, department objectives, the mission of the School Service Center, and customer-service expectations.
Observe and meet job schedules and completion dates.
Perform proper maintenance and servicing of equipment.
Make decisions and offer solutions to the unit Supervisor concerning field problems.
Delegate work as needed and lead a crew efficiently in the absence of the Supervisor and/or crewleader.
Display a willingness to be trained in all phases of the assignment and to improve job skills and efficiency.
Possess a work ethic strongly oriented toward efficiency and customer service, and maintain high integrity and trustworthiness.
