About The Position

The City of Greensboro is seeking a motivated and safety-focused Transfer Station Crew Supervisor to oversee daily operations at the Transfer Station within the Solid Waste & Recycling Department. This leadership position supervises a team of Heavy Equipment Operators responsible for loading transfer trailers, managing tipping floor operations, directing waste flow, and maintaining safe and efficient operations at a high-volume municipal transfer station that processes more than 1,000 tons of waste each day. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, prioritizes safety, communicates effectively, and is committed to delivering exceptional public service while supporting operational excellence. The Transfer Station Crew Supervisor oversees daily transfer station operations and supervises Heavy Equipment Operators responsible for processing and managing municipal solid waste in a safe, efficient, and compliant manner. The job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED with 1+ years' experience in transfer station, waste disposal, landfill, solid waste, public works, or a directly related field as it pertains to the job description OR No High School Diploma/GED with 5+ years' experience in transfer station, waste disposal, landfill, solid waste, public works, or a directly related field as it pertains to the job description.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Experience operating an excavator
  • Experience using Microsoft Word
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within 120 days of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Class A or B Commercial Driver's License
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe, front-end loader, or skid steer
  • Supervisory experience

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily transfer station operations, including loading transfer trailers, managing tipping floor activities, directing waste flow, and ensuring operational efficiency
  • Coordinate crew activities in support of departmental work plans and assigned operational priorities
  • Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate employees while assisting with hiring, attendance management, performance reviews, and corrective actions as needed
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies, OSHA standards, safety procedures, and all applicable regulatory requirements
  • Operate heavy equipment as needed and oversee the proper operation, inspection, and maintenance of crew equipment
  • Coordinate work activities with other crews, divisions, and departments to support overall operational success
  • Maintain effective communication with employees, customers, and internal and external partners
  • Respond to emergency situations and adapt to changing operational demands as needed
