About The Position

The City of Fredericksburg, Virginia is seeking a Full-Time Crew Member for Street Sanitation. This role offers hands-on training, essential public works experience, and opportunities for career growth. The position involves supporting waste management operations, including sidewalk and street maintenance, waste collection, and grounds upkeep. There are two levels, Crew Member I and Crew Member II, with increasing responsibilities and skill development. Progression is based on demonstrated skills, performance, training, certifications, operational needs, and funding.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification within one (1) year of hire (for Crew Member I).
  • Must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including all assigned training within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • One (1) year of experience and/or training involving manual labor or successful progression from Crew Member I (for Crew Member II).
  • Must meet and maintain all minimum qualifications, licenses, certifications, and training requirements established for the preceding position within the Crew Member career ladder (for Crew Member II).
  • Must possess a VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification (for Crew Member II).
  • Must complete and maintain OSHA-required training and certifications applicable to the position, including all assigned training within thirty (30) days in position (for Crew Member II).
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B (for Crew Member II).

Responsibilities

  • Sweeping sidewalks and streets to ensure cleanliness and safety for pedestrian use.
  • Collecting litter and emptying trash receptacles efficiently to maintain a tidy and welcoming environment.
  • Performing basic grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing lawns and raking leaves to keep outdoor spaces well-groomed and attractive.
  • Operating various street sanitation vehicles, such as street sweepers, water and trash trucks, dump trucks for snow and leaf removal, and recycling trucks.
  • Handling equipment like forklifts, tractors, mowers, and weed eaters for ground maintenance tasks.
  • Driving roll-off trucks to empty dumpsters at recycling centers.
  • Cleaning and maintaining gutters, drainage areas, and public infrastructure, performing minor repairs as needed, including barricade maintenance.
  • Providing traffic control during road work and maintenance operations.
  • Removing debris and hazards from public areas, including clearing dead animals, following safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Accurately completing work orders, activity logs, and daily reports on time.
  • Interacting professionally with the public, offering directions and assistance to residents and visitors.
