About The Position

Construction Crew Members perform day-to-day construction activities to achieve the goals of Habitat’s homeownership & home repair programs. Work will include site setup and cleanup, material handling, carpentry, painting, siding, etc., as assigned. New build projects typically include the preparation and finishing of modular home sets, but may also include occasional site-build work. Work may also include home repair and remodeling projects on existing homes as part of Habitat’s Home Repair Program, or maintenance and repairs at the organization’s facilities as needed. Senior-level crew members will be expected to be well-trained in all of the organization’s routine tasks and procedures. A Senior Crew Member will have the ability to carry out complex tasks, be able to work at a higher degree of independence, and will be expected to provide training and leadership support among the team.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in the residential construction industry is preferred but not required. Crew members may have a range of directly related experience in residential construction, including entry-level (no prior experience), informal experience/training, or direct experience in a professional employment setting.
  • Senior Crew Members will demonstrate 3+ years of professional experience and mastery of routinely used skills and tasks.
  • Willingness to learn and grow within the field
  • Able to follow directions and manage time efficiently
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to build solid relationships with team members, volunteers, vendors, and customers
  • Must be willing to understand the big picture of the work done by NMHFH and know that construction is only a part of the larger goal.
  • Regular local travel between work sites.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Willingness to work outside of standard operational hours (typically 2-3 days per month)
  • Must pass Criminal Background Check (convictions will be reviewed based on the seriousness of the crime, and a conviction does not necessarily mean disqualification)
  • Must pass a Sexual Offender Check. Being listed will result in automatic disqualification from employment
  • Crew Members will be responsible for assisting in supervising volunteer groups and individuals of various skill levels, as assigned.
  • Senior Crew Members will be directly responsible for leading, training, and supervising volunteers as assigned.
  • Senior Crew Members may also be required to oversee Crew Members in the absence of a Site Supervisor, as assigned.
  • Crew and Senior Crew Members will report to the Site Supervisor or other senior personnel as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Performs construction tasks within provided deadlines as directed by senior personnel, including new home construction, home rehabilitation, home repairs, and warranty work
  • Own assigned tasks and optimize project efficiency
  • Site preparation and cleanup (maintain a clean and safe site)
  • Handle and organize job site materials and tools
  • Foundation preparation
  • Rough framing and finish carpentry
  • Installing siding, porches, mailboxes, and other exterior finishes
  • Drywall hanging, finishing, and painting
  • Cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment
  • Follows protocols for inventory management and notifies a Site Supervisor of any materials or equipment needs
  • Adheres to the construction site safety program, including wearing safety equipment as appropriate, and reports safety concerns to a Site Supervisor
  • Ensures all work completed is of the highest quality
  • Completes home repair project work as assigned based on experience and skills
  • Completes maintenance, repairs, and renovation work as assigned. In rare cases, this may include emergency responses outside of normal working hours
  • Adheres to all safety, use, and maintenance protocols for assigned fleet vehicles
  • Nurtures a positive environment where volunteers feel engaged and valued
  • Provides support in the oversight and training of volunteers as assigned
  • Ensure the volunteer site is appropriately prepared for scheduled volunteer days, such as setting up materials and tools for the work activity, and ensuring the site is safe and organized
  • Senior Crew Members may lead volunteer groups as assigned, overseeing site coordination, training, and safety.
  • Senior Crew Members may have added responsibilities related to fleet tracking and maintenance.
  • Senior Crew Members may lead and train Crew Members in the absence of or as directed by a Site Supervisor
  • Senior Crew Members may be assigned specialized assignments or tasks based on expertise
