About The Position

This position supervises and instructs field crews engaged in irrigation, horticulture maintenance, grounds and open space within a designated geographic area. This position performs maintenance activities, operates equipment, assists in planning and organization of assigned work units and supervises front line parks maintenance staff. This position reports to the Supervisor, Parks Maintenance.

Requirements

  • Grade twelve (12), combined with 2 courses in turf or horticultural maintenance leading to certificate or diploma.
  • Three (3) years recent practical experience directly related to the maintenance of parks and open space and outdoor recreational facilities including one (1) year of progressive parks maintenance and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of park maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, equipment and tools used in park maintenance.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements and programs sufficient to implement healthy and safe working practices.
  • Knowledge of maintenance management principles and practices and ability to implement standards and levels of service within the section’s area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of the general rules and regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
  • Ability to prepare informal and formal reports, daily, weekly and monthly work plans and to read construction and grading plans.
  • Ability to operate fine turf mowers, tractors and other equipment used in parks maintenance.
  • Ability to meet and deal effectively with the public and fellow staff.
  • Must possess a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license.
  • Must possess or immediately get airbrake endorsement.
  • Permitted or certified on fine turf mowers, tractors and related equipment.
  • Must possess or immediately apply for and maintain the appropriate Saskatchewan Pesticide Applicators Permit.
  • Must be able to perform heavy physical labour in all types of weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and directs the deployment of labour, equipment and materials used in the maintenance and repair of parks and various other types of open space.
  • Provides training and direction to employees in skills and techniques required in maintenance activities.
  • Ensures the proper use of maintenance equipment and fertilizers, pesticides and other horticultural products that may be used in the management of open space.
  • Employs appropriate cultural and maintenance practices required to maintain healthy turf, trees and shrubs etc.
  • Documents problems related to the safe and effective deployment of labour, equipment and materials for follow-up by the supervisor and provides feedback on employee performance and conduct issues that tie –in with corporate programs and policies.
  • Operates various equipment as required.
  • Participates in the preparation of work plans for upcoming maintenance seasons.
  • Keeps accurate records and notes and assists in the preparation of statistical maintenance data.
  • Assists in the implementation of safe and healthy working conditions including tailgate talks and provides input for standard operating procedures.
  • Deals with the public in a courteous, sensitive, responsive and effective manner.
  • Assists in winter maintenance activities including the outdoor rink program and/or pathway clearing.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
