About The Position

American Commercial Barge Line is seeking a dedicated Crew Boat Laborer to join their team in Cairo, IL. This full-time, night shift position involves assisting in the cleaning of cargo hoppers and the exteriors of barges to prepare them for customer cargo loading. The role requires adherence to safety protocols, efficient task completion, and collaboration with team members. Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment, pumping water from compartments, assisting with barge repairs and special projects, performing maintenance, and conducting safety inspections and confined space tests.

Requirements

  • Must live 50 miles or less from the Cairo fleet location.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to work nights (5:30 PM - 5:30 AM).
  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Ability to perform job tasks as assigned by foreman/supervisor.
  • Strong attention to detail and precision.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Strong work ethic and team player.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing 75 pounds.
  • Basic knowledge of safety procedures and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Must understand and be able to demonstrate the ability to signal crane operator in the lifting and moving of loads.
  • Must successfully complete Powered Industrial Operators class prior to operating any front-end loaders, tractors, or forklifts.
  • Must successfully complete Rigger Training before being allowed to rig loads for crane to lift and move.
  • Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Skid Steer operator experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the cleaning of cargo hoppers and the exterior surfaces of barges to prepare them for cargo loading, using brooms, shovels, high-pressure water equipment, front-end loaders, tractors, and forklifts.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines, wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Complete cleaning tasks efficiently and effectively to ensure barges are ready for cargo loading as scheduled.
  • Maintain records of cleaning activities and report any incidents, accidents, or issues to the supervisor.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to ensure smooth cleaning operations and meet quality standards.
  • Pump water from void compartments and hoppers of company-owned equipment.
  • Assist with shingling of barges and other temporary repairs to ensure watertight integrity.
  • Assist with construction/repair of special projects.
  • Assist in performing preventative and routine maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  • Assist in performing safety audits/inspections of the work area.
  • Conduct confined space atmospheric tests.
