About The Position

This role involves creating high-quality creature assets such as hair, fur, muscle, skin, and costumes for live-action projects. The artist will be responsible for running simulations, preparing grooms, and executing shot sculpts, working in close collaboration with the CG Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to achieve the client's vision. The position requires working with both animated and matchmoved character motions to match filmed surfaces and create new elements based on creative briefs. A secondary requirement includes performing basic rigging for vehicles, props, and other supporting objects, as well as making simple rig adjustments or creations to assist with CFX simulations. The Creature Artist is expected to proactively communicate their approaches to technical and artistic challenges, collaborate with peers in animation, assets, FX, and CG teams, share expertise, and apply critical thinking to ensure optimal project results. The role also entails delivering shot work quotas according to schedule and maintaining effective communication with show Production regarding schedules and deadlines.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of Creature experience in a VFX studio
  • Technical background with proven experience on artistic tasks
  • Excellent understanding of body mechanics, acting, storytelling techniques
  • Excellent knowledge of Maya and/or Houdini
  • Previous experience with Linux platform
  • An understanding of Animation, Rigging, Modeling and FX
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks, set priorities and solve problems
  • Collaborative by nature
  • Open to direction and able to embrace change
  • Self-driven, good communicator, and a great team player

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of scripting with Mel or Python
  • Experience with Houdini VEX/scripting

Responsibilities

  • Work with both animated and matchmoved character motions to both match filmed surfaces, and to create new elements, per the creative briefs.
  • Secondary need for basic rigging - vehicles, props, and other supporting objects, and any simple rig adjustments or creation that could assist with driving CFX simulations.
  • Proactively communicate the best approaches you can envision to technical and artistic challenges.
  • Collaborate with your peers in the animation, assets, FX and CG team, sharing your expertise and critical thinking to ensure the best possible results for the project.
  • Deliver shot work quotas according to schedule.
  • Maintain effective communication with show Production regarding your schedule and deadlines.
