About The Position

The Creative Arts and Worship Coordinator position is a combined ministry role integrating music and creative arts education with worship leadership. This role collaborates with the Christian Education Coordinator to provide group music lessons and creative arts during after-school programs and summer day camps, as well as group and individual instruction to children and youth who express interest in developing their musical skills. This coordinator will also provide group music and creative arts lessons to seniors and adults with special needs and/or disabilities in coordination with community center staff. Additionally, the role assists Corps Officer(s) in planning and leading musical worship for church services on Sundays, ensuring that music supports and enhances the spiritual life of the congregation. The position requires a passion for teaching, strong musical ability, and a commitment to fostering both artistic and spiritual growth within the community.

Requirements

  • Active commitment to growing in the theology of biblical worship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in music education, performance, worship arts, ministry, or a related field (or equivalent ministry experience).
  • Experience teaching music to children and youth in a school or structured setting.
  • Proven experience leading worship vocally and instrumentally (guitar or piano) in a church or ministry context.
  • Strong vocal and instrumental proficiency, with exceptional musical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in team building, leadership, and fostering spiritual growth through prayer and discipleship.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with enthusiasm for working with children and youth.
  • Availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and creativity in worship planning and execution.
  • Ability to use a computer, email, and new software programs with basic training.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be a self-starter and a team player, perform well with minimum supervision.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.

  • An MVR will be processed every year in accordance with The Salvation Army’s policies
  • Continued employment will be contingent upon a biennial (every two years) background check that is processed in accordance with The Salvation Army’s policies.
  • In addition, able to obtain and maintain a "Cleared" status in the Colorado Provider Hub. This requires passing a federal/state fingerprint background check and a TRAILS child abuse registry check.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead/facilitate structured group music and creative arts education for youth in the after-school program, including piano/keyboard, guitar, brass, voice, dance, drama, music theory, sheet music reading, and other creative disciplines, adapting instruction to varying skill levels and learning styles.
  • Plan and lead/facilitate a consistent group music and creative arts classes for youth, providing progressive instruction, skill development, and opportunities for performance and participation in Corps ministries including at least one evening offering.
  • Develop and lead/facilitate group creative arts classes for seniors and adults with disabilities and/or special needs including a dedicated evening class for adults with disabilities and/or special needs, adapting instruction to participant abilities and interests.
  • Responsible for one dedicated music and creative arts week during Summer Day Camp.
  • Prepare and chaperone students and participants for recitals, Corps and community performances, and divisional or territorial competitions, coordinating fundraising, travel, additional chaperones, and supervision as needed.
  • Organize concerts and creative arts presentations at the Corps and community locations, including nursing homes, community events, and Sunday worship.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and coordinate volunteers to expand creative arts programming, support group instruction, and maintain appropriate youth-to-adult ratios and child safety standards.
  • Build positive relationships with participants through teaching, mentorship, and encouragement, creating a welcoming, inclusive, and safe learning environment attentive to the needs of the Whittier community.
  • Steward instruments, creative arts equipment, and related AV resources, maintaining inventories and ensuring equipment is properly cared for and available for instruction and performances.
  • Promote creative arts programs through community outreach, events, and social media, and evaluate program effectiveness through appropriate reporting and ongoing improvement.
  • Plan and lead/facilitate Christ-centered worship during Sunday services alongside the worship team through music, prayer, Scripture, and creative elements that support the message and encourage congregational participation.
  • Lead worship vocally and/or instrumentally, including guitar or piano, with consistency and excellence.
  • Incorporate creative elements such as choirs, drama, movement, responsive readings, special music, and other expressions of worship.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and provide pastoral encouragement to worship team members and volunteers, promoting spiritual growth, teamwork, and ministry excellence.
  • Coordinate worship for special events and seasonal services, including Christmas, Easter, VBS, plays, special music, dances, and other Corps ministry events.
  • Ensure sound, projection, and other AV needs are effectively coordinated for Sunday worship, special services, and performances.
  • Manage worship ministry resources and budget responsibly and actively participate in Sunday and holiday worship at Denver Red Shield, serving in additional worship and ministry settings as needed.
  • Design and lead programming from an intentionally Christ-centered perspective, incorporating prayer, Scripture, devotions, chapel, discipleship, and other spiritually formative practices.
  • Model a Christ-centered life and encourage participants, volunteers, and congregation members toward spiritual growth and connection with all Corps ministries, including worship, youth group, Bible studies, and other discipleship opportunities.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, complete required child safety and mandatory reporter training, follow Salvation Army policies and procedures, and support Corps and seasonal ministries, including Angel Tree and Christmas Red Kettles, as needed.
