About The Position

This procedure describes the basic functions, reporting relationships, authority, and responsibilities of the Crater I at S&P USA. The Job Description provides the performance criteria for the position. It also states the Job Requirements as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The person occupying the position of Crater I is responsible for fabricating wooden crates or boxes using woodworking hand tools and power tools, and packs such items as machinery, fans, or other large or odd-shaped products.

Requirements

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) or apprenticeship; or at least six (6) months of related experience and/or training.
Forklift certification required; or to be obtained within the initial 90 days of employment.
Minimal computer skills in the Windows environment and Microsoft Office Suite required.
Ability to read and interpret English documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to communicate in English (read, write and speak) is required as the overwhelming majority of customers, vendors, co-workers, and suppliers communicate in this language.
Reasoning ability is required to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Mathematical abilities to add, subtract, multiply, and divide three digit numbers and fractions on a measuring tape, along with the ability to perform these operations using units of American weight and measurement.
Standing – up to three fourths of the time.
Walking – up to three fourths of the time.
Sitting – up to one fourth of the time.
Talking/Listening – up to one fourth of the time.
Use of hands – up to three fourths of the time.
Climb or Balance – up to one fourth of the time.
Stoop or Kneel – up to one fourth of the time.
Reach with arms – up to three fourths of the time.
Body movements, lifting and exerting force – 75 pounds.
Hearing – the ability to communicate effectively.
Vision – the ability to record and prepare reports.
The ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as eye protection, back protection, ear protection, etc. as necessary or required.
Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Responsibilities

Reads shipping notices, and other specifications, and inspects product to determine size and shape of container, materials to be used, and types of supports and braces to be used.
Accurately lays out dimensions on materials with rules, measuring tape, and pencil.
Saws material to size, using handsaws and powered saws.
Assembles materials using nailing or stapling machine, screws, bolts, glue, and hand tools.
Places product in container manually or using hoist.
Bolts heavy pieces to bottom of container or skid.
Wraps and pads product with excelsior, paper, or other packing material.
Builds crates around large or odd shaped articles.
Nails cover on crate.
Wraps and tightens metal bands around crate.
Attaches identification labels or stencils containing such information as shipping destination, weight, and type of product contained in crate.
Repairs broken crates.
Covers other equipment with neoprene or other protective covering to protect them during shipment.
Counts items to be packed to ensure compliance with shipping orders.
Weighs loaded crate.
Moves container to shipping area, and moves lumber, paper and other wrapping supplies to crating area.
Process some light assembly work as well.
Observe all company policies and procedures.
Must be able to work additional hours to support the organization’s needs.
Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Final Assembly Supervisor and/or the Manufacturing Manager.
