About The Position

The crating lead assists the Shipping Supervisor by overseeing the crating department, coordinating with other departments, and determining the daily work priorities based on the shop load. This role involves reading, understanding, and enforcing safety programs and policies, leading by example in safe work practices, coaching and correcting unsafe behaviors, and addressing safety hazards and employee concerns. The lead also enforces company policies, communicates expectations, and provides feedback to employees. They report injuries to the EHS manager, assist in correcting hazards, and coordinate time off following work injuries. Additionally, the crating lead participates in hiring by interviewing candidates and advising on selection, assists in performance management by providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and communicating department goals, and helps coordinate training programs for new hires. They are the primary point of contact for day-to-day operations within the department, communicating between the supervisor and craters. The role includes designing crates based on engineering drawings or measurements, planning and accomplishing goals using experience and judgment, leading and directing the work of others, monitoring quality, keeping accurate records, training employees, ensuring manufacturing instructions are followed, and contributing to team efforts. The crating lead must also comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and procedures, and work overtime as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Read, understand and enforce safety programs and policies of RAE Corporation.
  • Lead by example by committing to safe work practices, coach and correct unsafe behaviors, correct safety hazards and respond to employee concerns regarding hazards in their work area.
  • Understand company obligations under the OSHA Act and comply with OSHA CFR 1910 regulations.
  • Read, understand and enforce company policies.
  • Communicate company expectations to department employees.
  • Provide feedback to employees regarding company policies as needed and keep supervisor informed of employee policy issues.
  • Report injuries to EHS manager timely.
  • Work with EHS manager in correcting hazards, coordinating time off following work injuries and offer transitional duty to employees with work restrictions.
  • Assist supervisor in hiring by participating in interviews and advising in candidate selection.
  • Assist supervisor in performance management by providing ongoing feedback in the form of coaching/correct to employees, communicating department goals, notifying supervisor of performance issues within the team, and participating in annual performance reviews.
  • Assist supervisor in coordinating training programs for new hires and ensuring new employees receive training, resources and feedback needed to become valuable members of the team.
  • Attend leadership and safety training as required.
  • Keep accurate list of crated coils/units on shipping reports.
  • Serves as the “go-to” person in the department for most day-to-day business helping to communicate between the supervisor and the craters.
  • Coach, train, mentor, and informally counsel, as well as provide on-going feedback to coworkers to optimize job performance.

  • Make recommendations and give feedback on various operational matters, including input on employee performance reviews.
  • Help facilitate informal resolution of issues in their areas, such as, conflicts or disagreements with/between coworkers.
  • Design crates based off of engineering drawings and/or specific measurements via tape measure.
  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Lead and direct work of others.
  • Monitor quality according to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Keeps accurate records of completions and scrapped work.
  • Train employees in procedure and work methods.
  • Ensures manufacturing instructions are followed.
  • Contribute to team effort by working with others and accomplishing related functions as needed.
  • Complete any task as assigned by supervisor as needed.
  • Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies and company procedures.
  • Work overtime as necessary.
  • Attend work as required.
  • Arrive for work on time.
  • Charge time accurately in time and attendance system on computer to ensure accurate labor distribution and payroll.
  • Follow manufacturing instructions, work by oneself without constant supervision, be self-motivated and complete job assignments on time.
  • Care for tools and equipment.
  • Advise maintenance of equipment that is not working properly.
  • Instruct employees to maintain clean work area and good housekeeping.
