Fabricates wooden crates or boxes, using woodworking hand tools and powered tools, and packs such items as machinery, vehicles, or other large or odd-shaped products. Reads blueprints, shipping notices, and other specifications and inspects product to define the size and shape of the container, materials to be used, and types of supports or braces to be used. Lays out dimensions on materials with a ruler, measuring tape, and pencil. Saws materials to size, using handsaws or powered saws. Assembles materials, using a nailing or stapling machine, screws, bolts, glue, and hand tools. Places product in the container, manually or using a hoist. Bolts heavy pieces to the bottom of the container or skid. Wraps or pads product with excelsior, paper, or other packing material. Builds crates around large or odd-shaped articles. Wraps and tightens metal bands around the crate, using banding equipment. Attaches identification labels or stencils containing information such as shipping destination, weight, and type of product contained on the crate. May cover military tanks or other equipment with neoprene or other protective covering to protect them during shipment. May count items to be packed to ensure compliance with shipping orders. May move the container to the shipping area, and move lumber, paper, and other wrapping supplies to the crating area, using a hand or industrial truck.
