About The Position

The Crane Operator is responsible for the safety of themselves and the Roustabout crew, attending safety meetings, and overseeing personnel in inspecting rig safety apparatus and equipment. This role requires good leadership skills to direct Roustabouts in support of a safe and efficient operation, adherence to lock-out/tag-out procedures, and ensuring lifted loads are clear of obstructions, within load limits, and properly secured. The Crane Operator safely operates crane equipment to hoist materials and equipment onto the MODU and to and from ocean vessels, assists with the inspection of lifting equipment, and performs preventive maintenance on cranes and equipment. Additionally, the role supervises cleaning and painting of the MODU, ensures compliance with Valaris safety standards and the Valaris Management System (VMS), and assists in corporate and regulatory body inspections. The Crane Operator fosters an environment for open communication regarding safety issues and maintains continuous voice communication with Roustabouts while operating the crane. They also maintain accurate Crane record books, ensure Roustabout crews comply with proper lifting techniques, and monitor sea and weather conditions to ensure safe loading and unloading operations. As an identified Barrier Authority (BA) under VMS, the Crane Operator is integral to managing Major Accident Hazards/Process Safety Risks, responsible for completing barrier integrity verification activities, assessing deficiencies, and taking corrective actions as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years as a certified Crane Operator Assistant with prior offshore experience preferred.
  • For rigs operated by BP the Crane Operator will need 3 years of experience.
  • Must meet the training and certification requirements which will vary by unit location according to local requirements and regulations. Specific unit requirements will be found in local job specification procedures and guidelines
  • Must have current Crane Operator certification

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for safety as well as that of the Roustabout crew.
  • Attends and participates in all pre-tour, post tour, and weekly safety meetings.
  • Oversees and trains personnel to inspect rig safety apparatus and equipment.
  • Demonstrates good leadership skills and directs Roustabouts in support of a safe and efficient operation.
  • Adheres to and follow lock-out, tag-out procedures.
  • Ensures lifted loads are clear of obstructions, within load limits of equipment and properly secured with tag lines.
  • Ensures lifting gear is properly color coded prior to use.
  • Directs Roustabouts as necessary to support MODU operations.
  • Safely operates crane equipment to hoist materials and equipment onto the MODU and to and from ocean vessels.
  • Assists with inspection of all lifting equipment prior to use (slings, cables, straps, shackles, wire ropes), etc.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks on cranes and equipment.
  • Supervises the cleaning and painting of the MODU.
  • Ensures activities are conducted in compliance with Valaris safety.
  • Ensures Roustabouts are in compliance with Valaris Management System (VMS).
  • Assists in corporate and regulatory body inspections.
  • Creates an environment in which open communications concerning safety issues can occur at the appropriate levels in the organization for appropriate action and resolution.
  • Remains in continual voice (radio) communication with Roustabouts while operating the crane.
  • Maintains accurate and up to date Crane record books.
  • Ensures Roustabout crews are in compliance when tying onto loads to be hoisted or moved and proper lifting techniques are used when carrying load by hand.
  • Monitors sea and weather conditions ensuring loading and unloading operations are safe.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • As an identified Barrier Authority (BA) under the Valaris Management System (VMS), integral to the management and control of Major Accident Hazards/Process Safety Risks. Responsible for the thorough and timely completion of assigned barrier integrity verification activities, as prescribed under VMS, for the assessment of associated deficiencies and, if applicable taking mitigating or corrective actions to the best of their competency, knowledge and ability.
