About The Position

Responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily activities of Crane Operations and will vary by client and project size with varying degrees of responsibility and authority and may supervise and coordinate activities for a whole project or just part of a project.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of five years’ experience/knowledge or combination of experience and education in a supervisory level
Must have nationally accredited certification i.e. NCCCO, NCCER or OECP
Must have an AD Certification
Take reasonable care of your own and others’ health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward Wanzek’s Zero Injury principles
Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports
Add, subtract, multiply an divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
Compute rate, ratio and percent and draw and interpret bar graphs
Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

Responsibilities

Ensuring all crane activities are being completed in a safe manner
Train and instruct crane operators in safe work practices for assigned tasks
Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures
Manage a combination of Crane Operators, Crane Support Riggers/Transport Drivers and Transport Drivers
Supervise overall direction, coordination, performance and evaluation of crane operation employees
Directly supervise, coordinate and delegate daily activities of Crane Operators, Crane Support Riggers/Transport Drivers and Transport Drivers
Communicate effectively to employees in oral and written form
Responsible for being the “competent-qualified supervisor” that meets the requirement of A/D Director referenced in OSHA standard 1926.14
Operation of levers and pedals to raise, lower and rotate boom and to raise and lower load lines
Raise, lower and rotate boom or load by sight or according to signals from helper
Observe load hook-up and safety of load
Ensure safety procedures are adhered to at all times
Perform daily inspection of cranes
Monitor weather conditions and site conditions
Clean, maintain and lubricate equipment
Obtain the required permits
Crane operator should be responsible at all times when operating a crane
Crane operators should be versatile and have a cooperative attitude as they may be asked to do other jobs on construction sites when they are not operating a crane
May be required to travel to different jobsites on limited notice
Maintain a professional appearance
Ensure annual inspection is up to date
Notify the supervisor or mechanic of maintenance issues
Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Superintendent
Fill in for other people when sick or on vacation
Look for ways to improve safety, quality and productivity
Monitor operator performance
Monitor daily inspections and ensure operators are performing routine maintenance
Act as the AD (Assembly/Disassembly) director in Crane Superintendents absence
Understand applicable procedures and follow SOP and manufactures recommendations
Ensures that each member of the crew understands his or her tasks, the hazards of the task, and any hazardous positions or locations to avoid
Must verify all capacities of any equipment used, including rigging, lifting lugs, etc.
Must address hazards associated with site and ground conditions, blocking material, proper location of blocking, verifying assist crane loads, boom & jib pick points, center of gravity, stability upon pin removal, snagging, struck by counterweights, boom hoist brake failure, loss of backward stability, and wind speed and weather
Complete all required project reports and maintain appropriate documentation on all facets of the project
Ensure that all operators are certified and maintain all equipment on the project
Assist Human Resources by interviewing, hiring, and training, appraising work performance and addressing complaints of employees in the field
Invest time and effort in enhancing apprentices’ skills and knowledge – champion the process
Provide positive environment to support coaching and mentoring of apprentices
Commit to accurate classification to ensure PWA (Prevailing Wage & Apprenticeship) compliance when applicable
Other duties as assigned
