About The Position

This examination is being given to fill multiple vacancies in the General Services Department and to establish an eligible list that may be used to fill future vacancies. These positions are located at the San Joaquin County Jail facilities and are subject to a passing law enforcement background check. Crafts Workers located at the San Joaquin County Jail are eligible for a 7.5% "Facility Pay" base salary increase. The following incentives and bonuses may be available for eligible new hires, subject to approval by Human Resources: Vacation Accrual Rate: San Joaquin County vacation accrual rate consistent with the candidate's total years of public service. Sick Leave: Candidates leaving other employment may receive credit for actual non-reimbursable sick leave hours (up to 160 hours) from their last agency. Hours shall be subject to San Joaquin County's minimum sick leave cash out provisions. New Hire Retention Bonus: $2,000 upon completion of first year equivalent employment (2,080 hours), $1,000 upon completion of third year equivalent employment (6,240 hours), and $3,000 upon completion of sixth year equivalent employment (12,480 hours).

Requirements

  • Two years of journey level experience in at least one of the building trades.
  • Four years as a Crafts Worker II in San Joaquin County Service.
  • Possession of valid California driver’s license.
  • Two years of journey level experience in one of the following building trades may be required for assignment or continued assignment to specific departments: Painting, carpentry, plumbing, welding, electrical, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC).
  • Mobility-Stand for long periods of time; push and pull; bend and squat; drive; operate heavy equipment; climb stairs; crawl; lift over 70 pounds.
  • Visual-Overall vision sufficient to read close-up; color perception; eye-hand coordination.
  • Dexterity-Reaching; grasping; repetitive motion; writing.
  • Hearing/Talking-Hear on the telephone/radio; hear faint sounds; talk on telephone/radio.
  • Emotional/ Psychological Factors-Emergency situations; public contact; decision making; heights; hazardous materials; working alone; working weekends/nights/overtime.
  • Environmental Conditions-Noise; dirt dust smoke, fumes, poor ventilation; indoor and outdoor temperature conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled painting, glazing, carpentry, plastering, locksmithing, masonry, plumbing, metal work, welding, electrical, mechanical, heating and ventilating, and related maintenance trades work.
  • Pours concrete, hangs doors, lays flooring, installs partitions and drop ceilings; repairs door closures, furniture and roofing; performs general carpentry work.
  • Performs general plumbing repair; installs water and gas lines, lavatories and faucets; unplugs sewers and drains.
  • Installs and replaces light fixtures, bulbs, ballasts and fuses; installs conduit, electrical wiring, switches and outlets.
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs on locks, appliances, automotive equipment, boilers, heating and ventilating, and related mechanical devices.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of motorized tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Reads, interprets and works from sketches, diagrams, or simple blueprints; forecasts material needs and orders supplies; maintains records; prepares reports.
  • May lead other workers.
