About The Position

The CPAP Clinician at Gwinnett Pulmonary & Sleep is responsible for educating patients on the use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) equipment and setting them up with the appropriate devices to manage their sleep apnea. This role involves providing personalized education and support to ensure patients understand how to use their equipment correctly, troubleshooting any issues, and following up to ensure compliance and efficacy. The CPAP Clinician plays a crucial role in improving patient outcomes by promoting adherence to sleep apnea therapy.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Respiratory Therapist (CRT or RRT) or equivalent clinical certification preferred.
  • Previous experience in sleep medicine or respiratory care, particularly in the management of CPAP therapy.
  • Strong understanding of sleep apnea, CPAP equipment, and the principles of positive airway pressure therapy.
  • Excellent communication and patient education skills, with the ability to explain complex medical information in an understandable way.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and CPAP-related software.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Educate patients on sleep apnea, the importance of CPAP therapy, and how the equipment works to manage their condition.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments to determine the most appropriate CPAP equipment and settings.
  • Set patients up with their CPAP devices, including mask fitting, adjusting pressure settings, and explaining usage instructions.
  • Provide detailed instruction on the maintenance and cleaning of CPAP equipment to ensure optimal performance and hygiene.
  • Offer ongoing support to patients, answering questions and addressing concerns related to CPAP therapy.
  • Troubleshoot issues with CPAP equipment, such as mask leaks, discomfort, or machine malfunctions, providing solutions to enhance patient comfort and compliance.
  • Conduct follow-up calls or visits to monitor patient adherence to therapy and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
  • Collaborate with physicians and sleep specialists to ensure patients receive comprehensive care tailored to their needs.
  • Monitor patient compliance with CPAP therapy through data downloads and usage reports from CPAP devices.
  • Educate patients on the importance of therapy adherence and strategies to overcome common barriers to consistent use.
  • Work with patients who are struggling with compliance to identify challenges and develop solutions to improve adherence.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including assessments, equipment settings, and follow-up notes, in the electronic medical records (EMR) system.
  • Document patient interactions and any changes to the treatment plan in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all patient data is handled with confidentiality and in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Ensure that all CPAP equipment and supplies are available, properly maintained, and ready for patient use.
  • Manage inventory levels of CPAP machines, masks, tubing, and other accessories, placing orders as needed.
  • Assist with the calibration and troubleshooting of CPAP devices to ensure they function correctly for each patient.
  • Ensure that all CPAP-related activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as practice policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, regularly reviewing patient outcomes and identifying areas for enhancing care.
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements in sleep apnea treatment and CPAP technology to provide patients with the best possible care.
