About The Position

This role involves explaining the WIC Program, determining participant eligibility based on medical/nutritional risk, and managing food packages and benefits. The position requires providing nutrition education, developing care plans, promoting breastfeeding, and distributing breast pumps. It also includes referring participants to other services, assisting with program implementation, and adhering to safety protocols. The role also involves staying current on health issues, assisting with outreach, and representing the WIC Program to various organizations and the public.

Requirements

  • Nutritionist (bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited institution with a major in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or a degree in another health science field, such as Public Health or Home Economics, with a minor in Nutrition); Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or RDN-Eligible through the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR), Nutrition and Dietetic Technician Registered (NDTR), Registered Nurse, Physician’s Assistants), or Physician.
  • Current PA Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • Free of Child Abuse/Neglect history as verified by proper authorities.
  • Must obtain FBI Fingerprinting, PA State Police Background Check, Child Abuse and NSOR Clearances prior to starting employment.

Nice To Haves

  • RDNs, NDTRs and Nutritionists are preferred.
  • One year of experience in the community/public health nutrition setting or one year of graduate work.
  • Minimum one year’s experience in client interview techniques

Responsibilities

  • Explains Basic concept of the WIC Program to WIC participants.
  • Determines eligibility with regards to medical/nutritional risk, performing anthropometric measurements, hematological testing, and food package tailoring in accordance with State Agency policy and procedures.
  • Reviews the food package and WIC food list to WIC participants and loads benefits on the eWIC card.
  • Assures local agency compliance with requirements for documenting medical/nutritional risk status and all nutrition education services provided in participant files.
  • Provides nutrition education and prepares nutrition care plans under the direction of the Nutrition Education Coordinator for WIC participants, including high risk contacts.
  • Promotes and supports breastfeeding and its multiple benefits through meetings dealing with breastfeeding issues as well as through participant education, participant care plans and by maintaining follow up breastfeeding contacts.
  • Responsible for evaluating, educating, and distributing breast pumps to WIC participants in the absence of the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.
  • Refers participants to other health related and social service agencies.
  • Assists with implementation of Local Agency Nutrition Education, Breastfeeding and Outreach Plans.
  • Responsible for adhering to the blood borne pathogen compliance program in accordance with OSHA standards in regard to safe disposal of all used hemocue supplies at all WIC clinic sites.
  • Keeps current on health issues by researching and/or reviews current health/nutrition publications in areas related to the WIC Program.
  • Assists Outreach Coordinator with all outreach objectives.
  • Provides public relations by representing CAPCC WIC Program to other health agencies, schools, physicians, offices, and social service organizations and the general public.
